This game helps children to divide a 3 digit number by a 1 digit number using a part whole model. One of the first maths facts children begin learning 💛 Doubles are simply adding the same number together: ➕ 1 + 1 = 2 ➕ 2 + 2 = 4 ➕ 3 + 3 = 6 ➕ 4 + 4 = 8 ➕ 5 + 5 = 10 When children know these facts automatically (or can work them out quickly using a strategy like sticky fingers 🤚), it frees up brain space for more challenging maths. Knowing doubles also helps children with: ✨ Near doubles (e.g. 5 + 6 = double 5, then add 1) ✨ Addition and subtraction ✨ Multiplication and division later on ✨ Building confidence with number patterns The sticky fingers strategy came from my daughter’s wonderful teacher, and it really stuck with her (excuse the pun! 😄). If your child isn’t recalling their doubles yet, encourage them to hold up the number on one hand and “stick” the same number of fingers from the other hand to double it. Over time, many children naturally move from using the strategy to recalling the facts automatically. What you’ll need: ✏️ A piece of paper 🎲 A dice ⭕ Two counters (or anything you have at home!) How to play: 1️⃣ Draw a simple racetrack and write the even numbers 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 repeatedly around the track. 2️⃣ Take turns rolling the dice. 3️⃣ Hold up that many fingers. 4️⃣ Use sticky fingers to double the number. 5️⃣ Count how many fingers you have altogether and move your counter to the matching number on the track. 🎲 Roll a 6? Miss a turn! The first player to reach the finish wins. Want to extend the game? ⭐ Encourage your child to say the answer before using their fingers. ⭐ Ask, “How did you know?” ⭐ Try near doubles (e.g. “Double 4 is 8... what’s 4 + 5?”) ⭐ Challenge your child to explain how they worked it out before moving. ⭐ Once they’re confident, swap the dice for number cards or use two dice to practise larger doubles.
