The May Queen is a traditional figure in English🏴 and other European spring celebrations, most closely associated with May Day on the first of May. Typically, she is a young girl or woman chosen to represent the season, crowned with flowers and presented as a symbol of renewal, youth and the flourishing of nature.
The custom is well attested from the late medieval period onward, when May Day festivities became an established part of village life in England and other parts of Europe. These celebrations often included music, dancing and the decoration of homes and communal spaces with greenery and blossoms. The maypole, around which people danced with ribbons, became another enduring feature, symbolizing vitality and the arrival of summer.
The deeper origins of the May Queen tradition are less certain. While it is often suggested that such customs may have roots in earlier seasonal or pre-Christian celebrations — sometimes linked to festivals like Beltane — there is no direct historical evidence connecting the medieval May Queen to these earlier practices. Scholars generally treat the tradition as a development of medieval seasonal festivity, though it may reflect broader and older patterns of marking the return of spring.
Culturally, the May Queen reflects a long-standing tendency to mark the changing seasons through communal celebration and symbolic figures. While today the role is largely ceremonial and community-focused, it continues to evoke themes of springtime renewal and the cyclical rhythms of the natural world, and is often understood as echoing earlier associations with fertility and harmony with nature.

A Message from Your May Queen
"As May Queen, I want to light you all up. I want to give thanks to you for your courage during a time when the world feels very dark. I want to celebrate the actions we take in love and solidarity, in love and rage, in the hope that we can heal ourselves and our hurting world."

It’s May in Camelot again 🌸🌷🌸
A bit of “The Queen of May” by @hmallcott and Meg Ammons. Reposting this inspiring song for May Day! The English tradition of crowning May Queens and Kings goes back to the middle ages: One of the earliest sources of this tradition dates to 1240, when a bishop of Worcester condemned clerics who attended “games to be made of a King and Queen.” However, it’s very possible that the practice goes back to many centuries earlier. The duties of these monarchs varied widely, but they often seemed to consist of residing over as well as designing and managing entertainment for the local area- not just during May Day, but for the summer season as a whole. These activities could include supervising religious plays, acting as masters of artillery, and organizing shows for visiting royalty.
The May Queen of this modern song is much more wild and independent! I love how the vision of the May Queen can transform over time to match the spirit of our own May celebrations!
Lyrics:
A soul that calls like a siren
Wild like the moors and the braes
Never a lover, never a bride
But always the Queen of May
See her when she passes by
Passes by, passes by
Bonnie, she will catch your eye
Bright like a summer’s day
Reelin, steppin, she did fly
she did fly, she did fly
Like a sparrow through the sky
Crown her the Queen of May
