Where they are used: • Minor tooth movement • Midline correction • Simple space maintenance • Habit breaking • Functional growth modification in growing patients What they cannot do: • Rotation correction • Torque • Bodily movement • Severe crowding • Comprehensive alignment Why their biomechanics are limited: • Force control is not as precise as fixed appliances • Appliance moves during speech/eating • Depends on patient wearing it 14–16 hours Clinical points: • Always evaluate patient compliance before prescribing • Best results in mixed dentition • Useful for habits and growth modulation • Springs, screws and elastics give only limited forces Important viva line “Removable appliances are effective for simple tipping movements but not for complex orthodontic biomechanics.” Save this if you want a quick revision before viva or clinic day.
