In 2017 I rage quit my full time job 😡
I wanted to work for myself and start my own business.
But as you might imagine that’s always so much easier said than done. While I’ve had a lot of success I’ve also made a lot of mistakes along the way.
The biggest being, wasting time chasing things that weren’t FOR me.
I chose the path of max resistance far too many times along the way.
Like putting up with a rotten client. Or begging for work at a networking event vs simply using a dedicated freelance platform.
Or today with my blogs, finding content creator forward platforms to generate traffic and pay me to post rather than fighting AI and Google for table scraps.
It’s never “easy” per se. But we also have a choice. Chase things that are meant for us and go where we are wanted, or don’t.
For me, I’m going where I know the fish will be biting. I choose the path of least resistance.

Bloggers who use #mediavine! Did you know you can increase your ad revenue without gaining more traffic?
Here’s how:
1. Make your font size bigger: this makes your content longer & more space for ads
2. Shorter paragraphs: ads populate between paragraphs, the more paragraphs you have, the more ads!
4. Write long-form content: not only is this good for SEO, but long content means more real estate for ads!

If you asked me IRL, here’s the answer so I don’t have to explain for the billionth time! 😂
💰 THIS IS HOW MY TRAVEL BLOG MAKES MONEY 💰 - by which I mean website! I don’t make money from social media
- 60% display ads on the website (@mediavine; you need 50k monthly readers to apply) - readers don’t need to click on them, just see them
- 40% ish affiliate marketing (no minimum no. of readers to start) - I place links to hostels, tours, insurance etc and when customers make a purchase with Hostelworld, Viator etc, I get around 10%. I don’t have to talk to the companies individually as @travelpayouts handle that
Those are my top methods but other ways to monetise include hosting group tours, producing sponsored content (organised on an ad-hoc basis with brands who want coverage whether it’s staying in their hotel or promoting a product etc), selling digital products, making courses etc
💰I’ve been blogging since 2017 and it took until 2020 to make a penny/cent.
💻 I don’t pay anything to get people on my site, my traffic comes from Google thanks to the SEO I do (self-taught)
💵 My income is in the thousands each month (GBP) and my website costs around £70 a month to run (website hosting, research tools, Shutterstock photo subscription etc)
Any questions? Drop them in the comments!

WHAT HAPPENED 🫠😅little me would be so irritated if she knew how bad I dropped the ball. In 2015, during my senior year of college, I went to the Women in Travel Summit in Boston. There, after interning for @travelchickstv the previous summer, I learned that writing in the travel space really was a viable career. Growing up, I always told anyone who would ask that my biggest, wildest dream was to host a show on @travelchannel I think Globe Trekker was my favorite at the time. I remember watching @adventurouskate give the keynote speech and I thought, “Okay, Em. You’re an English major. You got this.” So I went home and set everything up and got started right away. Then after I graduated I needed money to pay for my student loans, so I started working part time as an assistant and a tutor. I picked up a couple of online writing jobs to start building my portfolio, while chipping away at building my blog in the background. For about three years. Then, in 2018, I went to Australia! Suddenly I was traveling full time and felt more like experiencing real life adventure than writing about it. I built my online freelance portfolio so the point that at one point, I almost needed to start subcontracting work out. For a 24 year old, I was RICH. While in Australia, I needed to work in person jobs to extend my visa. So I worked full time in person and then came home to work full time online, too. I was exhausted. My blog was the last thing on my mind. Even when I moved home from Australia in 2021, I was able to make a little money from reels on Instagram, but for the most part my entire income was writing for other people. Which I love! I really do. I love not having to clock in anywhere and being able to write at 3am if that’s what suits me. I love being able to write from anywhere in the world. But, what I would love more than anything, is to spend more time writing about adventure than generators or fast food restaurants (not that those aren’t important). I really took stock of what’s important to me, and when it comes down to it, it’s She’s a Trip. I’m back in Texas living with my parents for a season. ⤵️⤵️ continued in comments
