Meet Melibe leonina! 🍉
Some people say this nudibranch smells like watermelon (although I strongly advise AGAINST taking them out of the water! They can detach their cerata under stress!)
Needless to say, I think the real message of this watermelon-scented nudibranch is: FREE PALESTINE 🍉
Sending love and small natural joys to all who need it right now ❤️
In the kelp forests of Monterey Bay, California, the hooded nudibranch (Melibe leonina) performs a mesmerizing feeding dance. With its translucent oral hood spread wide, it sweeps through the water like a living net, snapping shut on drifting plankton and tiny crustaceans. Its ghostly, leaflike body glides among the kelp, turning a simple hunt into a captivating underwater spectacle.
Melibe viridis is a carnivorous sea slug that hunts using a large, balloon-like oral hood made of soft, transparent tissue. Instead of biting its prey, the hood spreads across the seafloor like a net and suddenly snaps shut, trapping small animals inside. The motion works almost like a soft vacuum, allowing the slug to swallow its prey whole.
Inside the hood are tiny sensory hairs that detect movement from small crustaceans such as shrimp and crabs. Once contact is sensed, the hood quickly contracts and funnels the prey straight into the mouth. Scientists have even found entire small crabs inside their stomachs, showing how efficient this feeding technique really is.
Melibe viridis lives in shallow tropical waters across the Indo-West Pacific and has also appeared in the Mediterranean, likely entering through the Suez Canal. It can grow up to about 14 cm long and has a translucent green body with leg-like appendages that help it move along sandy seafloors. Its unusual hunting method highlights how some nudibranchs evolve highly specialized survival strategies without relying on jaws or teeth.
I’m an OBSESSED with this little baby sea slug, filmed by @mo.fishy.adventures 🥹 This fairy is actually a hooded sea slug, Melibe leonina. Those beautiful wings are called Cerata, and are like shimmering external lungs. This sea slug also has the remarkable (and mysterious quality) of smelling very strongly like watermelon. Thanks so much @mo.fishy.adventures for letting me share your awesome post!

Let’s take a closer look..
This Hooded Nudibranch was chilling at the waters surface, mouth opening and closing as they drifted and feasted!
When I uploaded my images, I was amazed to see all the tiny beings that were hanging out on and around it, taking their chances!
Thousands of Melibe Nudibranchs covering nearly every inch of kelp at a dive site in Central California. Melibe leonina, or Hooded Nudibranchs, are a type of filter feeding sea slug that occasionally appear in large numbers off our coastline. For some reason they also smell like watermelon jolly ranchers 🤷♂️ #nudibranch #seaslug #kelp #kelpforest #melibe
The holy grail of nudibranchs
aka phantom nudi
aka ghost nudi
aka Melibe colemani
Spotted this in Romblon. I was very much shocked that this was a nudibranch! 👻
I thought it was an algae at first, then I saw it move… Couldn’t figure out which end was the head at first. 😅

Share these hooded sea slugs with a frond to kelp us all reset our algal rhythms! Melibe leonina nudibranch sea slugs are still carpeting some kelp forests in Monterey Bay, California. The slug’s sweet scent sometimes smelled from the beaches when wind and waves whip the proteinaceous froth into a marine meringue on the shore. The Ocean’s Most Stylish Ghost 👻🌊
Meet the Melibe nudibranch, the underwater world’s answer to “What if a jellyfish and a piece of lace had a baby?”
Unlike your average sea slug, these ethereal beauties are famous for their massive, translucent oral hoods. They don’t just crawl; they cast their “nets” to catch tiny crustaceans in a move that’s equal parts graceful and sci-fi.
Here’s why they’re iconic:
The Look: They’re often completely see-through, showing off their internal organs like a living anatomy lesson.
The Scent: Believe it or not, some species (like Melibe leonina) actually smell like watermelon or sweet fruit when handled! 🍉
The Vibe: Watching them move is like watching a slow-motion dance through a kelp forest.
Nature really popped off with this design. 🐚✨

I came across this nudibranch swimming at night while I was searching for octopus. It reminded me so much of the hooded nudibranchs from the Pacific Northwest, and it turns out it’s closely related! This is the Green Melibe, cousin to the Hooded Nudibranch, AKA Melibe Leonina.
Green Melibes are predatory sea slugs that will throw their ‘oral veil’ forward to ensnare passing prey.

Melibe viridis aka (the hooded nudibranch) is a mostly translucent sea slug. It uses a massive, expandable hood fringed with tentacles to sweep across the seafloor, trapping food like a net.
