Here’s a video of Ben, Kim and Matt: The Seattle Mariners retired Randy Johnson’s number and Soundgarden was included in his tribute video. MLB legend Randy "Big Unit“ Johnson is a huge fan of Soundgarden, whereas the love was mutual. The former pitcher, who often wore Soundgarden shirts under his jersey during his career, now works as a professional concert photographer. He has photographed the band on numerous occasions, combining his passion for photography with his love of music. A little story: In May 2009, on the eve of their 25th-anniversary show in Seattle, the Melvins — Dale Crover and Buzz Osborne — went to watch the Mariners play the San Francisco Giants at Safeco Field. At the game, they ran into a longtime friend, Soundgarden bassist Ben Shepherd. Shepherd told the duo he was going to the show the next day and would be bringing along a friend to The Showbox theater. That friend? Five-time Cy Young winner Randy Johnson, who was in town pitching for the Giants. "Ben was like, ‘I’m going to bring him to your show after the game,’ and I was like, ‘Really? OK,‘” Crover said. “I didn’t really believe him. Sure enough, he comes down the next day and he’s got Randy Johnson with him.” Johnson had met Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil decades earlier when he was pitching in Seattle because he was a fan. Source: New York Times 2020 Anecdote: In a freak accident on March 24, 2001, at Tucson Electric Park, during the 7th inning of a spring training game against the San Francisco Giants, Johnson threw a fastball to Calvin Murray that struck and killed a dove. The ball was ruled dead, and it was ruled "no pitch“.The event was not unique in baseball history, but it became one of Johnson’s most-remembered baseball moments. In a 25-year retrospective, ESPN called it "one of the earliest viral moments in all of sports,“ and Johnson himself said in 2015 that "he gets asked about the incident nearly as much as he does about winning the World Series later that year.“ After retirement, Johnson formed a photography company and made a dead bird its logo. focuses on atmospheric, sludgy riffs rather than a clear narrative meaning. The song has been featured in live performances, sometimes accompanied by the band’s signature high-volume,feedback-heavy intro. The song fits within the band’s sludge metal/grunge aesthetic, often focusing on “drop-d riffage” and discordant noise Melvin’s live at UCLA university 1993 Song name: zodiac #melvins #metal #sludgemetal #grunge #metalhead

For us, there is none higher than the almighty Melvins. Over the past 30 + years they have played more than any other band at GAMH and have been mesmerizingly brilliant every single time. This Monday (September 5th) they return for a fully electric, loud and awe-inspiring set that will almost certainly show once again why they are, in our humble opinion, one of the all time greatest American bands in recorded history. To celebrate and calibrate here is a piece of ephemeral archive of the legends on the GAMH stage way back in 1992, performing “With Yo Heart, Not Yo Hands” …. See you on Monday. Do. Not. Miss. 📹 by Peter Graham. #melvins #greatamericanmusichall #sanfrancisco #1992 #legends

The Melvan, current day, hidden somewhere in Seattle Washington. In 2012 when the Melvan went up for auction on ebay, I was envious of the person who went ahead and bought it. Cut to today when I was given the opportunity from the buyer to come take videos/pictures of the van hidden in a garage somewhere in Seattle. I was aware of this image of Kurt Cobain (see the last few seconds of this video for reference) taken by the great JJ Gronson @jj_gonson_photo (go follow her!) inside the Melvan (so I thought) in 1989. I was so familiar with it because I was also trying to track down the location of that image...which I was able to figure out that it was taken somewhere in Boston (still trying to find the exact spot, but I’m close!). It’s always been said that it was taken inside the Melvan, so when I was given the opportunity to visit the van I was ecstatic at the fact I would be able to line this up inside the van! After arriving and further investigation, things weren’t lining up. It looks good, but small details were askew. For one, the seat fabric wasn’t the same. Though the passenger door is similar, the shape of it was a bit different. Even the interior roof was off. Is it possible that a new door and seat were put in after time, yes! I’m hoping someone might have more details on it then what I had to go from...which wasn’t much. With all this going against me, I can’t positively say this was the same van JJ took the picture of Kurt in Boston in. I would like to be proven wrong, but I have to go with my gut and research on this one. Perhaps the 1970 Dodge Sportsman’s was the go to for touring bands and Nirvana rented something similar for their 1989 tour… NOTE, that doesn’t discredit the verified Kurt Cobain drawing and history of the Melvan! What you’re seeing is the real deal! It’s awesome in itself and something I wish I owned. Not just for the original Kurt Cobain artwork, but also for the history of the Melvins’ time within this van. Pretty cool! Thank you to the owners for allowing me access to witness it in person. I owe you! @melvinsdotcom #melvins @realkingbuzzo @drcrover #KurtCobain #kristnovoselic #nirvana #kiss #genesimmons @sharpie
