Did you know your child’s ability to cross the midline can make or break their reading success? 📖✨ The midline is an invisible line down the centre of the body. Crossing it means moving the eyes, hands, or feet across to the other side, like when your child’s eyes scan smoothly from left to right across a page. Here’s why it matters for reading: ✔ Builds smooth eye tracking so they don’t skip or lose words ✔ Strengthens both sides of the brain to work together, key for comprehension ✔ Supports hand–eye coordination for neat handwriting ✔ Makes reading feel natural and fluent, instead of clunky and tiring If a child struggles to cross the midline, reading can feel slow, frustrating, and disconnected. The great news? Fun, simple activities can build this skill, like drawing big sideways figure 8s, touching opposite elbow to knee, or playing catch across the body. If you’re also interested in learning the exact system to teach your child to read from start to finish, drop “20” below ⬇️ and I’ll send you my FREE 20-minute reading training. #earlyliteracy #learningthroughplay #parenttips #readinghelp #phonicsfun #readingtips #teachreading #earlylearning #readingathome #literacymatters #eyfs #homeschoolinguk #readingmom #mumlifeuk #readingcoach #eyfsideas #teachyourchildtoread #readingisfun #readwithme #parentingmadeeasy #midline
Working on vertical surface is one of my favorite activities which benefit in many different ways ⤵️ ⭐️shoulder stability- bigger arm movement encourage upper limbs strengthening ⭐️wrist extension- naturally put the wrist in extended position, encourage wrist control and pencil grasp ⭐️spatial awareness- better understanding of directionality on large vertical surface ⭐️midline crossing- allow reaching larger area with dominant hand ⭐️bilateral coordination- demand to use both hands such as stabilizing paper while writing ⭐️eye-hand coordination- encourage visual tracking and attention
Most children are not using only their eyes to track. They are using their entire body 🧍 Why? Because the upper and lower parts of the body are not yet fully integrated. Before visual tracking becomes organized, the body needs: • grounding • stability • upper ↕ lower integration When this organization is missing, the system compensates through the whole body. This is part of the functional up–down midline. The body stabilizes first. Then the visual system can organize more efficiently. — Comment UP DOWN ↕️ to learn more. #thehelamethod #midline #visualtracking #nervoussystemregulation #childdevelopment sensoryprocessing proprioception vestibular bodyorganization developmentaldelay specialneedsparenting neurodevelopment
Sometimes what feels like a hardware problem is actually a software problem. Meaning, if you always feel tight or tense in some places, it may not be due to the muscle being too tight, but more so due to the way you posture yourself according to the “software” your brain is running. 👩‍💻 If you don’t have a sense of your true midline, and that perceived midline is shifted, 😵‍💫you will get tense and tight in certain places because those muscles don’t get to fully LET GO like they would if you could easily shift side to side. I actually see this A LOT in clinic, and when we address the software problem, a lot of the hardware problems go away! 😮 Want to get detailed instructions on some upright techniques to re-find your midline? You’re in luck! 🥳I have a self paced online class out NOW that teaches you how to do that. Comment “midline” below and I’ll send you the link to the class 🙌 #midline #posturalrestoration #softwareproblem

✨ Before your baby can master crawling, standing, or even writing - this needs to happen first! Crossing midline is a critical skill that helps build your baby’s coordination, body awareness, and core strength. It’s more than just a milestone - it’s essential for: 🧠 Strengthening communication between both sides of the brain 💪 Improving balance and controlled movement 👀 Helping your baby understand how their body moves This skill lays the foundation for milestones like: 🥄 Self-feeding (reaching for food and actually bringing it to their mouth) 🔄 Rolling and crawling 🚶‍♀️ Walking and balancing 📖 Reading and writing The good news? You can start encouraging it early! Try: 🤲🏼 Bringing baby’s hands together or hand to feet during play 👀 Visually tracking in different directions 🎯 Place toys just out of reach during tummy time The more your baby practices crossing midline, the stronger their foundation for movement and learning will be! Did you know one of the biggest milestones for your child’s brain and body is crossing midline? 🧠✨ 👉 The “midline” is the invisible line that runs down the center of the body. When a child can move one hand, foot, or eye across that line to the other side, it shows their left and right brain hemispheres are working together. Why it matters: ✋ Builds coordination for everyday tasks (feeding, dressing, writing) ⚖️ Strengthens core and balance skills 📖 Supports reading and writing by helping the eyes and hands move smoothly across a page 🧩 Encourages problem-solving and body awareness Activities like reaching for toys across the body, crawling, and playing games that involve twisting or passing objects side-to-side all help strengthen this skill.
