Al Jolson’s famous ‘My Mammy’ wasn’t just a heartfelt performance, it was minstrel propaganda. By turning the racist ‘Mammy’ caricature into a tearful love song, it softened the stereotype and made white audiences cheer for it. The sweetness was the trick because it turned racism into nostalgia. Minstrelsy didn’t always mock loudly. Sometimes it sang softly. Songs like ‘My Mammy’ wrapped racist caricatures in sentiment and love, making audiences clap for stereotypes without seeing the harm. That’s how propaganda works. It looks emotional and It feels nostalgic but what people were applauding wasn’t real Black motherhood, it was the ‘Mammy’ caricature.

Minstrel shows were 19th- and early 20th-century performances where white (and sometimes Black) actors wore blackface to mock and stereotype Black people.
These degrading caricatures weren’t just entertainment; they shaped how society saw Black communities, spreading harmful myths of laziness, ignorance, and criminality that fueled systemic racism.
Optics
“Optics” is about perception, how things look rather than what they truly are. For Black people, the legacy of minstrel imagery created destructive optics that continue to influence public perception today.
From biased media portrayals to racial profiling, these optics determine how people of color are viewed, valued, and treated.
Understanding how minstrel performances distorted optics reminds us why disrupting racist narratives is essential for racial healing. When we change the optics, we change the future.

Celebrating Ida Cox who was called "The Uncrowned Queen of the Blues."
Born Ida Prather in Toccoa, Georgia, Her family lived and worked in the shadow of the riverside #plantation, the private residence of the wealthy Prather family, from which her namesake came. She left home at fourteen to tour with a #minstrel revue. Cox excelled at vaudeville singing, but when the popularity of #vaudeville shows began to fade, she transformed herself into a formidable #bluessinger and worked the Southern tent show and vaudeville circuit. She spent some time with pianist #jellyrollmorton before signing a recording contract with Paramount in 1923.
Ida Cox may have been the complete classic #blues artist of the 1920s. She had a convincing delivery that made her one of the most popular female singers of the era with #BessieSmith and #MaRainey. Cox symbolized the liberated spirit of black American blues women in the '20s with her stylish outlook, lavish wardrobe, and business savvy. Cox wrote many of her own songs, often produced her own stage shows, and managed her own touring company, appropriately called Raisin' Cain.
