modern baseball were a philadelphia emo band gen-z fell hard for. plainspoken songs about anxiety, crushes and growing up, sung like diary entries. on august 17, 2015, co-frontperson bren lukens went up onto the roof of their house, planning not to come back down. a text arrived from bandmate jake ewald. nothing dramatic, just an ordinary day-to-day message. it was enough. lukens climbed down and told a friend, who called jake. the band kept making music about it instead of hiding it. their 2016 album 'holy ghost' is largely about the depression that followed, and the song "tripping in the dark" describes that night on the roof directly. in early 2017 modern baseball canceled a us tour and stepped away, saying they needed to protect their mental health and their friendships. they have been on hiatus ever since, but for a lot of fans, "modern baseball saved my life" was never just a lyric. @purp.indie #purpindie
