“Music is a higher revelation than all Wisdom & Philosophy.” — Ludwig van Beethoven
Moonlight Sonata, Movement I

In 1801, Beethoven fell in love with his young piano student, Giulietta Guicciardi, and dedicated this sonata to her. But because of the difference in their social status, their love was never meant to be.
At the same time, Beethoven was beginning to realize that he was slowly losing his hearing. In a letter to a friend, he confessed that he had isolated himself for months because he didn’t want anyone to discover his hearing loss.
It was during this difficult period that Piano Sonata No. 14 was born—a work with a calm, melancholic, and mysterious atmosphere that many believe reflects Beethoven’s emotional state at the time.
Years later, the German poet Ludwig Rellstab wrote that the first movement reminded him of moonlight shining over Lake Lucerne. From then on, the piece became known as the “Moonlight Sonata”—a title Beethoven himself never chose.

Moonlight Sonata, but this time you can watch the music move across the fretboard.
The notes are exactly the same, but seeing the melody, bass and repeating triplets together somehow changes the way I hear it.
Does seeing it change what you hear?

Same music. A different way to see the harmony.
I turned the first 16 bars of Moonlight Sonata into body language — each character follows the tension, release, and color of the chord underneath it.
Which one feels the most accurate?

A closer look at Beethoven’s “Moonlight” Sonata.
In this masterclass, legendary pianist András Schiff explores the third movement of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-sharp minor, Op. 27 No. 2, one of the composer’s most famous and technically demanding works.
The final movement is marked Presto agitato, contrasting sharply with the famous slow opening movement. Schiff examines its phrasing, articulation, rhythm, and dramatic character, offering insight into how Beethoven’s writing should be approached at the piano.
Despite being known today as the “Moonlight” Sonata, Beethoven never gave the work this nickname himself.
