Exposure isn’t what kills, it’s overconfidence especially with the weather. Even if this move isn’t as dangerous as people say, when we downplay it we invite inexperienced climbers to try it and they won’t think to check the weather. Sadly that’s what gets a lot of people in bad situations on the Grand.
The Belly Roll is a short exposed section on the Owen-Spalding route where climbers have to work around a large rock feature with a huge drop below.
Interestingly, I couldn’t find a documented fatality specifically from the Belly Roll. But the Grand Teton has a long history of climbing fatalities, with falls and snow/ice travel accounting for many of the serious accidents.
The most dangerous sections tend to be higher on the mountain and during descents, especially when snow or ice makes the route slippery.

🏔️ That day, it felt like we were on top of the world.
The sky cleared up the moment we arrived at the summit. We had climbed in the clouds for the last 300m and it looked like we would be unlucky with the view that day.
But gradually, the wind carried the clouds away, even for a little while and we were blessed with one of the most incredible summit views we could hope for. The entire Italian side of the Matterhorn was for us to admire.
These mountains... They are so gorgeous. If you add in the effort and intensity of the climb, this was the reward of a lifetime.
8:17am, August 2026... We had made it.
Oh... And did you see that rock fall at 0:27 ?? Crazy.
Blessed and grateful for this summit. I learned and am still learning so much.

Viele machen die Watzmann-Überschreitung als Mehrtagestour, wir haben sie an einem Tag gemacht und hatten den Berg dabei fast für uns alleine. Wow 🤩

Die Wettervorhersage kündigte für den Nachmittag 50 % Regenwahrscheinlichkeit an. Unser Plan war am Hocheck umdrehen, wenn das Wetter nicht hält und Regen für die eigentliche Überschreitung aufzieht.
Oben angekommen sah es vielversprechend aus und es kam sogar die Sonne heraus.☀️
Eine der eindrucksvollsten Bergtouren, die ich bisher gemacht habe. Die epischen 360 Aufnahmen sind etwas wilder als in echt aber sie zeigen glaub ich Trittsicherheit und Schwindelfreiheit sind bei der Tour Voraussetzung.
Unglaublich dankbar, das mit meinen Freunden erlebt zu haben, vor allem wirklich das wir den Berg fast für uns alleine hatten.
