How is this even possible? 🤯😱🥹 If you told us there was one road that can take you from desert saguaro cacti to snow covered alpine pine trees over 27 miles, we never would’ve believed you before this trip! 👋Hi there! We are Kelley & Carl, an American couple with a goal of visiting all 63 US National Parks! Check out @kelleyandcarlsadventures for all things hiking, road trips, outdoor adventures, and national parks! 🗺️Just 45-60 minutes from downtown Tucson, Mount Lemmon rises 9,159 feet in the Santa Catalina Mountains, offering one of the most dramatic elevation changes in the country! 🚙Mount Lemon Highway (also called Catalina Highway or General Hitchcock Highway) is a 27-mile paved highway that climbs over 6,000 feet in elevation, transitioning through multiple life zones including Sonoran Desert cactus forests, oak woodlands, and pine forests. 👀There are numerous scenic pullouts with sweeping views. Our favorite overlook was Windy Point! 🏔️Mount Lemmon is considered a “sky island”, which comes from the analogy of this mountains being like an island of forest in a sea of desert. ⛷️Summerhaven at the top of the drive also offers one of the southernmost ski areas in the US. 🌵This drive is the PERFECT addition to a Saguaro National Park itinerary! If this road isn’t on your bucket list, you HAVE to add it because we’ve never seen anything like this 😍

When you visit New Mexico and suddenly feel like you’ve been transported to the Tetons… 🏔️✨ The rugged, jagged peaks of the Organ Mountains just outside Las Cruces are one of the Southwest’s most underrated hidden gems — giving major Grand Teton National Park vibes without the crowds. One of the best ways to experience them? The Dripping Springs Trail 🥾 This easy-to-moderate hike winds through desert landscapes, historic ruins, and old sanatorium sites tucked into the mountains — a mix of nature + history you don’t expect in the desert. Fun fact: these dramatic peaks are often said to have inspired scenes from The Wizard of Oz 🌪️ — and once you see them, it makes perfect sense. And here’s what makes this stop even better for a road trip 👇 You’re only about 45 minutes from White Sands National Park — making this the PERFECT add-on for a New Mexico adventure. Think: hike rugged mountain trails in the morning, then walk barefoot across endless white gypsum dunes by sunset 🤍 If you’re planning a Southwest road trip or mapping out your full-time RV route, this combo is seriously hard to beat. Save this for your New Mexico itinerary 📍 Follow The Roamsteaders as we travel full-time as an RV family in our Brinkley 3610, exploring national parks, hidden gems, scenic hikes, and bucket list destinations across the U.S. 🚐🏔️ #usatravel #placestovisit #placestogo #hike #hiking
The desert feels loud in the summer. The mountain doesn’t. On the drive up to Mount Lemmon, the temperature drops. The trees get taller. The stress gets quieter. By the time you reach Carter Canyon Cabin, it’s 30 degrees cooler — and it feels like you traveled much farther than an hour. This is where families reconnect. Where friends stay up late on the deck. Where mornings feel slow again. You don’t need a big plan. You just need the right place. Book your escape. #visitarizona #VisitTucson
We had a nice scenic drive up Mount Lemmon to go to the cookie cabin. A place we found while we were in MN researching about places to check out once we moved. #giantcookie #cookiecabin #mountlemmon #scenicdrive
