☝️Staphylococcus aureus is a species of gram-positive, B hemolytic, catalase-positive, coagulase-positive cocci that are normally found on human skin, nose, ears, axilla, and groin. Despite it being part of normal flora, don’t underestimate its ability to cause severe and life-threatening infections. 💯 For USMLE exams, remember the most common infections caused by staph aureus which include skin and soft tissue abscesses, internal organ abscess including liver and kidney, infective endocarditis, septic arthritis, and probably the highest yield of all: osteomyelitis! It also commonly causes prosthetic-related infections of joints but their brother staph epidermis is more likely to be the culprit in that. ⚠️ Staph Aureus creates the TSST-1 superantigen which can cause toxic shock syndrome - a life threatening systemic reaction to the superantigen including fever, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, shock, and eventually end organ-failure. No Muay Thai or Jiu Jitsu guy was worried about Covid during the pandemic…because Staph and MRSA make it look like a cake walk. Since I’m gonna be here a while…I’m working on an obstacle course. This will help me work on my wheelchair skills, and give me something to do when not hooked up to IV’s.
