Mudskippers are one of the weirdest (and coolest) animals on the planet - because they’re basically fish that walk around on land.
These little amphibious fish can breathe outside of water, using a combination of their skin and special chambers in their gills that hold moisture. That means they can spend a surprising amount of time hopping around on land, exploring mudflats, climbing roots, and even “waving” at each other!
Mudskippers also have powerful fins that act almost like legs, helping them scoot, climb, and launch themselves across the mud. And yes…they can even climb up onto rocks and mangrove branches!

O saltador-do-lodo …
1. Esse é um mudskipper, ou saltador-do-lodo. É um peixe anfíbio que passa mais tempo fora da água do que dentro dela.
2. Ele respira pela pele e por uma câmara na boca que funciona como pulmão. Só precisa manter o corpo úmido pra não “se afogar” no ar.
3. As nadadeiras peitorais são musculosas e funcionam como perninhas. Ele literalmente anda, pula e escala troncos com elas.
4. Os olhos ficam no topo da cabeça igual periscópio. Ele pisca pra lubrificar os olhos porque não tem pálpebras normais.
5. Machos constroem tocas na lama com câmaras de ar subterrâneas. Eles enchem a toca de ar carregando bolhas na boca pra não inundar.
6. São super territoriais. Levantam a barbatana dorsal colorida pra intimidar rivais e fazem “flexão” pra mostrar domínio.
7. Apesar da cara de bravo, comem só algas, pequenos crustáceos e insetos. Essa ração na mão dele provavelmente é um petisco.

Mudskipper, yani çamur zıpzıpı, gelgit bölgelerinde yaşayan sıra dışı bir tür. Solungaçları tamamen devre dışı kalmıyor; nemli kaldıkları sürece çalışmaya devam ediyor. Bunun yanında derisi ve ağız boşluğundaki dokular da oksijen alışverişine katkı sağlıyor. Bu sayede suyun dışında saatler geçirebiliyor.
Göğüs yüzgeçleri kaslı ve hareketli. Onları birer “kol” gibi kullanarak çamurda sürünmüyor; bilinçli adımlarla ilerliyor. Mangrov köklerine tırmanabiliyor. Başının üstünde konumlanmış gözleri ise bağımsız hareket ediyor. Yani hem karada hem suda çevreyi geniş bir açıyla tarayabiliyor.
Mudskipper’lar bilim insanları için çok değerli bir model. Çünkü yaklaşık 370 milyon yıl önce denizden karaya doğru gerçekleşen evrimsel geçişin nasıl mümkün olmuş olabileceğine dair yaşayan ipuçları sunuyorlar.
