Finding a mudsnake LIVE! #herping #wildlife #reptiles #mudsnake #southflorida
One of my first wildlife videos, and haven’t seen this species since 💀 Florida mud snakes (Farancia abacura) are among the most elusive native snakes in the state. They spend most of their lives hidden in aquatic habitats or underground, which is why most people will never encounter one in the wild. Non-venomous, secretive, and highly specialized, this species is a perfect example of how misunderstood Florida reptiles can be. #animals #carnivore #reptiles

Big beautiful brown water snake!! These snakes are harmless and very often confused with the venomous cottonmouth/water moccasin. They can be long and robust snakes that often bask in vegetation like this or on logs, often scaring people kayaking thinking the snake will attack them, which of course they won’t and want nothing to do with humans! When caught they do often bite a lot, but they’re totally harmless and can’t hurt you. They mainly feed on fish and at night I’ll often see them fully underwater in the bottom hunting for fish 🐟. #snake #florida #animals #nature

🌊🐍 Meet the Cottonmouth Snake! 🐍🌊 Also known as the Water Moccasin, this venomous snake is famous for the white interior of its mouth, which it flashes as a warning. Native to the southeastern United States, the Cottonmouth is a powerful predator of swamps and wetlands: 🔸 Habitat: Prefers slow-moving streams, swamps, ponds, and marshes 🔸 Diet: Feeds on fish, amphibians, birds, and small mammals 🔸 Behavior: Semi-aquatic and bold, often seen basking near water or swimming with just its head above the surface 🔸 Venom: Hemotoxic and potentially dangerous, though bites are rare and typically defensive Curious about the Cottonmouth and its role in wetland ecosystems? This snake was crossing the road at lower temperatures than when I usually find them. This year has been an extremely dry year & these snakes take advantage of small puddles where fish are stuck. They pile up & take turns fishing for minnows & small catfish. After that they seek a warm surface to lay on. Snakes are such interesting creatures.
