Music Genres Visualized Through Time: - - This graph depicts the amount of music releases within a certain genre on a specific year, throughout time. The data is taken from rate your music, meaning it won’t be completely accurate, but it is fine enough for the purpose of this post, as the relevance of releases may be more important than the exact amount. This model oversimplifies genres to their most basic form, which in of itself are already an oversimplification of the actual music. This is especially the case with music within the “regional music” genre. For that genre, I have separated the music based on the location it came from (denoted with *). The gap widens further down the list. The top three alone earned a combined $648 million, while the 25 artists on the full ranking were heavily concentrated in the U.S. and U.K. American artists took 16 of the 25 spots and collectively earned $1.086 billion. CD sales increased the most, growing by 16%, largely due to BTS’ ARIRANG. Outside of K-Pop, CD sales still grew by 6.7%. Total physical albums sold reached 38.2M, which tells us that fans want to own and feel the music they love in their hands.
