This may look strange at first...
But, this simple test checks for the Spinal Galant Reflex โ one of the most commonly retained primitive reflexes we see in kids with ADHD, sensory issues, and focus struggles.
๐ถ This reflex should go away in infancy, but if it sticks around, it can cause:
โ Constant squirming in chairs
โ Sensitivity to tags, clothes, or touch
โ Bedwetting past toddler years
โ Struggles with focus and emotional regulation
When we gently stroke along the lower back and the child twitches or shifts, itโs a sign the nervous system is still reacting like itโs in survival mode.
๐ง That means the brain is using energy to manage reflexes instead of learning, focusing, and regulating emotions.
๐ก But hereโs the good newsโฆ
You can start rewiring the brain and integrating these reflexes naturally โ at home!

Did you know?
When kids squeeze a ball between their knees, they activate deep core and hip stabilizers โ the same ones that prevent W-sitting, flat feet, and poor posture later on.
๐ง Add in balance + eye-hand coordination like this, and youโre not just โplayingโ โ
youโre building neuromuscular pathways for better focus, body control, and confidence.
โจ Save this game if your child:
โ๏ธ W-sits
โ๏ธ Has flat feet or knock knees
โ๏ธ Struggles with coordination
โ๏ธ Has trouble focusing or fidgets a lot
๐ฃ Itโs fun. Itโs screen-free. And it works.

This child isnโt just playing. Theyโre rewiring their nervous system. ๐ง
The prone position on the spin board directly challenges the Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex (TLR) which is a primitive reflex that, when retained, affects focus, coordination, muscle tone, and emotional regulation.
Add graded vestibular movement (the spinning) + a visual perceptual task (sorting by color) + motor planning and execution (reaching, grasping, placing)โฆ
And youโve got MULTI-SYSTEM integration happening in real time.
This is how we create lasting neurological change at NeuroNest. We donโt isolate skills. We layer challenges strategically so the brain learns to integrate multiple systems under functional demand.
When a retained primitive reflex is blocking development, we have to create the RIGHT neurological challenge to help it integrate.
This is what neuroadaptiveTM intensive therapy looks like.

This may look strange at first...
But what youโre seeing is called the Starfish Exercise, and itโs not just movement โ itโs a brain-based technique designed to help kids who are struggling with:
โก๏ธ ADHD
โก๏ธ Autism
โก๏ธ Anxiety
โก๏ธ Emotional outbursts
โก๏ธ Sensory overload
โก๏ธ Focus and learning issues
๐ง The Starfish works by targeting the Moro Reflex โ one of the earliest survival reflexes babies are born with. If this reflex doesnโt go away (or โintegrateโ) as a child grows, it can keep the nervous system in a constant state of โfight or flight.โ
That means:
Overreactions to sound, light, or touch
Trouble calming down or sitting still
Random outbursts or tantrums
Sleep issues and trouble focusing
โ
The Starfish exercise mimics the startle response, then teaches the brain how to calm and reset.
โ
It helps regulate the nervous system, build better body awareness, and promote emotional stability.
โ
Just 2 minutes a day for a few weeks can make a BIG difference โ especially when used consistently as part of a brain-based routine.

Plantar Grasp Reflexโ
Babinski reflex ๐ซin Infants
When you gently press the sole of a newbornโs foot near the toes, watch how the toes curl inward as if trying to "grasp" your finger! ๐คโจ
This primitive reflex is present at birth and typically fades by 9 to 12 months of age. Its presence reflects healthy neurological development in early infancy. โ
โ ๏ธ If this reflex persists beyond 1 year, it may be a sign of delayed neurological maturation and should be evaluated further.
โ
๐ Normal in infants | Abnormal if persistent after 12 months
๐ A simple but powerful clinical tool in pediatric neuro exams!

I remember thinking no screentime was going to be hard, and weโre 2.5 years inโฆ
But what I feel grateful for is that lack of screentime for the babe meant way less TV/phone/computer for me!
And I have no idea what heโd be like if we did do screens but I can tell you I havenโt yet had to deal with a single meltdown after taking screens away. And that alone makes me never wanna start ๐
Weโll get there some day and o canโt wait to watch a movie together!
Until then, we now have more books than shelve space and a kid that just wants to play outside. โ๐ป
And disclaimer here is that I donโt have older kids that introduce screens to the little one. I left my career to be home and play so I donโt need screens as distraction for my ability to get stuff done. I donโt go out a ton where screens can be a lifesaver for keeping chaos down in confined pibkic places. You get the gist. I made my personal choice that works for us based on a lot of the developmental data I read. And every family will be different and make choices right for them.

These simple-looking exercises are actually brain-builders in disguise.
โจ Cross-lateral coordination โ Key for reading, writing, and organized movement
โจ Core stability + limb control โ Critical for posture, focus, and endurance
โจ Proprioception โ The brainโs ability to โmapโ the body in space
โจ Bilateral integration โ The foundation for tying shoes, using both hands, and even emotional regulation
Neurodevelopment isnโt something we grow out of โ itโs something we build from the ground up.
๐ Thatโs exactly what my Healthy Posture & Feet program does โ it turns movement into developmental gold. DM for more information.
If your child runs like a โdrunk giraffeโ ๐ฆ๐จโฆ letโs talk about dyspraxia.
Dyspraxia (also known as Developmental Coordination Disorder) affects how the brain plans and coordinates movement. Kids with dyspraxia often:
โข Look uncoordinated or clumsy
โข Struggle with tasks like buttoning shirts or tying shoes ๐
โข Have poor balance or difficulty catching a ball โฝ๏ธ
๐ง Whatโs happening in the brain?
There are three key areas we often see involved:
1๏ธโฃ Cerebellum โ coordination & smoothness of movement
2๏ธโฃ Motor Cortex โ planning and executing actions
3๏ธโฃ Parietal Lobe โ body awareness and spatial processing
โจ Simple ways to support these areas:
โข Cerebellum: Try โFloppy Fishโ โ how smooth can your child wave their arms side to side? Or play weaving games using your arms as an obstacle.
โข Motor Cortex: Play ScissorsโPaperโRock โ๏ธโโ โ great for planning, reaction, and sequencing.
โข Parietal Lobe: Do โheavy workโ โ gymnastics, lifting, crawling, brushing with a therapy brush, or even pushing/pulling games.
When we combine activities that engage all three brain areas, coordination, focus, and motor planning can improve dramatically over time.

When the Moro reflex is unintegrated, a child may show symptoms like:
๐ช Overreacting to sounds, lights, or touch
๐จ Heightened anxiety or startle response
๐ฃ Difficulty with transitions or change
๐ต Poor balance and coordination
๐ด Sleep disturbances
๐ข Emotional outbursts and poor self-regulation
โ
What Happens When Moro Reflex Gets Integrated:
As the reflex gets integrated through targeted movement and therapyโฆ
๐ Reduced startle response โ child feels safer in their environment
๐ Improved emotional control โ fewer meltdowns and better mood stability
๐ง Better sensory regulation โ less overwhelmed by stimul
i
๐ฏ Improved focus and attention โ especially in classroom settings
๐ More restful sleep โ calm body = calm brain
๐คธ Enhanced motor control โ especially posture, coordination, and balance
๐ง Why This Happens:
Moro integration calms the fight or flight center of the brain, allowing the childโs nervous system to shift from survival to learning, playing, and growing. It reduces constant stress signals and helps the child feel safe and in control of their body.

๐ณ โWhy is my kid always on edge?โ
Kids ages 4-12 really benefit from this routine!
If your child melts down over seemingly nothingโฆ
Struggles to calm down after big emotionsโฆ
And lives like theyโre stuck in fight-or-flight modeโฆ
๐ It may not be behavioralโit might be a retained Moro reflex.
This early startle reflex is meant to protect babiesโbut if it sticks around, the brain stays on high alert, causing:
๐บ Increased anxiety
๐ฅ Emotional outbursts
๐ Trouble with self-regulation
๐ Sensory overload
๐ซ Difficulty focusing
Hereโs what I do when I suspect the Moro reflex hasnโt integrated ๐
โธป
Step 1: Regulate first
๐ Rhythmic movements โ gentle rocking, swaying, or bouncing
โก๏ธ These calm the nervous system through repetition and predictability.
๐คฒ Deep pressure โ squeeze or press the legs, arms, and torso
โก๏ธ This grounds the body and tells the brain โyouโre safe now.โ
โธป
Step 2: Then integrate
๐ฟ Popcorn โ curl into a ball and then pop out like popcorn
โก๏ธ Helps retrain the startle response through controlled movement.
๐งธ Starfish Pillow Grab (aka Python Squeeze in our family) โ squeeze a pillow with arms and legs from a spread-out starfish position
โก๏ธ Mimics the Moro reflex and trains the brain to process it properly.
๐งฒ Gluing to the Floor โ press arms and legs firmly into the floor
โก๏ธ Builds body awareness and calms the sensory system.
โธป
๐ Do these 5 movements dailyโyouโll start to notice fewer meltdowns and more calm ๐
