When he voted for President Donald Trump several months ago, Craig Fuller thought he was supporting pro-business policies and small, targeted, incremental tariffs that would encourage strategic industries to bring production back to the United States. Trump’s aggressive, erratic trade penalties on a litany of goods, including from Mexico, Canada and China, have stirred some wariness among American businesses, causing a slight slowdown in domestic freight, Fuller said in a phone call. Tariffs on Chinese goods now stand at 145%, which Fuller said is effectively an embargo. The Chattanooga Zoo is preparing to say goodbye to Pilatus, the first red panda born there in the past eight years. Friday, the 1-year-old Pilatus will be sent to the Beardsley Zoo in Connecticut as part of a national breeding effort to preserve the red panda species. As the blockbuster musical “Hamilton” concludes its two-week run in Chattanooga this weekend, a different perspective on the American founding father and the artist who brought him to the forefront of pop culture takes the stage. Local organizations Chattanooga Festival of Black Arts and Ideas, Next Exit Productions, Scenic City Shakespeare and Lookout Live are collaborating on a production of Reed’s play at The Howard School. Showings are Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 2:30pm at the Howard School auditorium. Chattanooga is one step closer to becoming North America’s first National Park City, following a visit by a peer review team with the London-based organization that issues the designation. For several days, the peer review team has traveled around Chattanooga, visiting parks such as Stringer’s Ridge and meeting with the city’s partners on the initiative like Reflection Riding and Crabtree Farms. Based on their time in Chattanooga, the peer review team, with members from England, Scotland, Australia and the Netherlands, will evaluate the city according to a list of criteria and determine whether it receives the designation.
