Located in Antarctica, the South Pole sits at the southernmost point of the planet, where all lines of longitude meet and every direction from there is technically north. It’s a frozen desert with temperatures that can drop below –60°C, months of complete darkness in winter, and nonstop daylight in summer. Despite the brutal conditions, the South Pole is home to important scientific research stations where scientists study climate change, astronomy, and Earth’s atmosphere. There’s no permanent population—only rotating researchers—and yet this harsh, silent place plays a massive role in understanding our planet’s past, present, and future.
