7 practice tips that made a huge difference for me as an oboist:
1. Organize your breathing before you even start practicing. In fact everything else doesn't make sense if your breathing is different everytime you play.
2. For non-classical music: Practice technically difficult passages at tempos faster than you’ll actually perform them. When you return to the real tempo, it often feels much easier.
3. For every style of music: Instead of playing the whole piece over and over, spend 30 minutes on the same 5 seconds if necessary. Perfect the smallest section before moving on.
4. Start your practice with something you’re bad at. Your mind is freshest at the beginning of a session, so use that energy where it matters most.
5. Change your practice environment or the room whenever you can, as often as you can. A new setting can increase focus and help your brain stay engaged instead of relying on autopilot.
6. If you practice late at night, play the same material again the next morning. A night’s sleep helps your brain consolidate what you’ve learned, and you’ll often notice real improvement.
7. About a week before a performance, rehearse in your concert clothes and recreate the concert situation as realistically as possible. The more familiar the experience feels, the more confident you’ll be on stage.
Patience. Patience. Patience. Slow and steady wins the race. 🎵

The owner of this extraordinary oboe let me try it at IDRS. 💙 It’s very smooth and silky, like the name. Still, I’m happy with my own oboe – an all-synthetic @bulgheroni.como Musa! ❤️
Thank you, Bulgheroni, for making oboes that sing!🎵
(It’s a left C-sharp key!)
