Dogs that bark and lunge on the lead, but are totally fine off lead, usually fall into two categories: frustration or anxiety.
When a dog wants to greet but can’t, that frustration builds and comes out as barking and lunging.
And when a dog feels uncomfortable around other dogs, they use barking and lunging to create distance.
The solution for both?
Clear expectations and controlled exposure.
Start at a distance where your dog can stay calm, then gradually work closer as they succeed.
If your dog struggles on a short lead, a long line can help a lot. It lets you practice engagement and recall when your dog notices other dogs. Once your dog gets good at disengaging and coming back to you, walking past dogs on a short lead becomes much easier provided you have taught them the expectations of how they should walk on a short lead.

Be honest —
👉 IS YOUR DOG AGGRESSIVE or MISUNDERSTOOD?
(Comment below 👇)
Most dog owners think growling, barking, or snapping = aggression.
But research suggests many of these behaviors are actually signals of confusion, insecurity, or lack of structure — not just “bad dogs.”
A dog doesn’t randomly become aggressive.
It reacts based on:
• Environment
• Consistency
• Clarity from the owner
The real question is not:
“Is your dog aggressive?”
It’s:
“Are you understanding what your dog is trying to communicate?”
This is where most owners get it wrong.

🚫 Most dogs aren’t “bad”… they’re made this way.
If your dog is:
• barking nonstop
• destroying things
• ignoring you
• acting hyper or reactive
👉 This is why:
❌ No structure → your dog guesses everything
❌ No exercise → energy turns into chaos
❌ Rewarding bad behavior → it repeats
❌ Inconsistency → your dog stops listening
❌ No mental stimulation → boredom = destruction
⚠️ Be honest…
You’re not seeing a “bad dog.”
You’re seeing the result of a broken system.
⸻
🧠 Dogs don’t learn from words alone.
They learn from:
• patterns
• timing
• what gets rewarded
🔥 Fix THIS and everything changes:
✔ calm behavior increases
✔ barking drops
✔ focus improves
✔ your dog actually listens
👉 Part 2 shows exactly how to fix it (don’t skip it)

From lunging and barking at my dog…to walking past calmly with zero reaction.
This pitbull came in highly reactive. The moment he saw my dog he would lunge and bark.
After a few minutes of clear structure, guidance, and working around my balanced mentor dogs, everything changed.
Now he can walk right past my dog without reacting and even hold a sit-stay while we walk into his house.
Most reactivity isn’t aggression. It’s confusion, lack of structure, and lack of leadership.
When dogs understand expectations, the chaos disappears.
That’s exactly what we focus on in my Spring Reset Board & Train Program.
🌿 Spring Reset Program Includes:• Obedience foundations (heel, sit, stay, recall, place)• Leash manners — no more pulling or chaos on walks• Impulse control (door manners, waiting, calm mindset)• Structured socialization around balanced mentor dogs• Real-world exposure and training• Owner guidance so you know how to maintain the results
This program is designed to reset bad habits and build a calm, obedient dog you can take anywhere.
⚠️ Limited spots available. Spring Reset ends soon.

➡️Here he’s jumping, barking, biting… completely overexcited. Which is normal for a puppy, specially during his first phase.
The day before, he showed the same behavior,
but the other dog didn’t react.
✅ This time was different.
After giving many hints to relax and respect his boundaries, which he acknowledged for a moment but then ignored,
this dog set a clear, calm boundary.
➡️The owner had already told me his dog would correct him in a non-violent way exactly what he needs at this age to learn his limits.
No fight. No escalation. Just clear communication.
And that’s exactly what happened.
✅This kind of interaction helps puppies understand boundaries before things turn into bad habits or reactivity.
➡️ Don’t intervene or overprotect your puppy
unless you’re unsure about the other dog.
✅ What I did:
• The first part of the interaction was calm and friendly
• I spoke with the owner beforehand
• I knew how the adult dog would react (correct, not escalate)
• The dog was balanced and not reactive
• Size matters, I could step in and separate if needed
• Both dogs had space to move and disengage
• I stayed close and attentive the whole time
❌I made a small mistake here when I called him
before allowing a calm interaction. I was worried about his feelings when he was hiding behind the owners leg. I should have just give him the option to come to me by clearing the path between me and the dog.
But he didn’t respond… so it turned out perfectly he ended up interacting calmly.
✅This is an important part of learning.
Puppies don’t only learn from us. In fact if we intervene each time we might create a reactive dog.
They learn from balanced adult dogs who communicate clearly without violence.
✅What matters is:
• the interaction stays controlled and safe
• the adult dog is stable and not reactive
• the puppy can process and re-engage calmly after and that’s the key moment: He reset… and calmly re-engaged.
This is how manners are built. 🐾

Real talk…I’ve seen small dogs get away with behavior that get bigger dogs rehomed for.
If they pull leash…it’s not that bad. They’re tiny.
If they bark…no big deal. You just pick them up.
If the climb all over you…aw! They’re cuddly and they fit so nice in your lap.
But when you zoom in on where that behavior is actually coming from, the “cute” turns into an unregulated nervous system, an anxious puppy, or a dog that’s insecure.
Dog behavior doesn’t change based on the size. Only the consequences do.
A 10lb dog pulling, barking and reacting is still struggling. It’s just more manage than a 60lb dog doing the same.
But here’s the cool thing…when you hold the small dogs to the same training standards - structure, leash manners, neutrality, clear communication - their size then becomes a perk.
They can relax in your lap without the anxious attachment.
They can come everywhere with you without reacting at everything.
They can handle the world with confidence without a Napoleon complex.
So ask yourself : would I allow@this behavior if my dog was 60 pounds?
You’re dogs nervous system doesn’t care about size. They still need clarity in a world that’s very confusing for them.

Most owners try to fix the reaction.
But the real work happens before the reaction.
If your dog is already barking and lunging, their brain is overwhelmed — they can’t learn in that moment.
Training starts at a distance where your dog can stay calm and still pay attention to you.
That’s where confidence is built.
If this sounds like your dog, send me a message and tell me what they react to most.
If you’ve ever thought,
“Why isn’t this working?”
This is probably why.
Most reactivity training focuses on behavior.
But behavior (barking & lunging) is the symptom.
Dogs learn through association (emotional learning/classical conditioning)
or
Through Consequence (the result of a behavior) (for reactivity = barking makes the dog go away - even if the dog was walking away anyway).
If you mix those up, progress stalls.
In this series, I’m breaking down how dogs actually learn — and how to use that knowledge correctly.
Comment UNDERSTAND if this makes sense.

This is what real-life training looks like.
At Barker & Bone Urban School, we don’t train dogs in perfect, quiet environments… we train them where life actually happens.
🚗 Car rides
🏡 Busy neighborhoods
🐕 Dogs barking behind gates
👣 Real distractions, real situations
Because the goal isn’t just obedience — it’s confidence, neutrality, and control anywhere you go.
In this video, while other dogs are losing their minds, this dog chooses calm.
No pulling. No reacting. No chaos. Just composure.
That’s the difference between a trained dog… and a dog that’s prepared for the real world.
Imagine walking your dog without embarrassment.
No shouting. No stress. No apologizing.
We build dogs you can take anywhere.

If my dogs were actually in danger, they would not have to defend themselves cause I have their back; they don’t gotta become reactive or doubt our leadership; if we take out the trash for them ;)
-
But she didn’t get too crazy, just out of line enough for me to take the opportunity to show her that was inappropriate
-
Bonus tip - if your dog ever is under attack, drop your dogs leash and help your dog deal with the aggressing dogs, choke it out or dust its ribcage (sorry no force free disinformation to save a dogs life)

Wondering how to train a reactive dog?
Reactivity isn’t a disobedience problem, it’s an emotional one.
And most trainers use obedience to *try* change behavior when the real problem is emotional.
They teach reactive dogs to Leave It, Sit or Disengage. And that might work for mildly reactive dogs.
But teaching a dog to Sit or Sniff doesn’t change the emotion inside.
And, if I’m being honest most dogs are like the dog in this video, the barking and lunging happen quickly, there isn’t time to get the dog to sniff.
If you want your dog to look at another dog and keep walking like it’s no big deal, then you need to rewire their brain.
I’ve used the same process for 15 years with my private clients and it’s not hard to do.
Comment REWIRE
and I’ll send you a video of exactly what I do and what you need to do.
The dog in this video is extremely reactive. She would bark at people, birds, noises and dogs. Her parents struggled for years and gave up on walking her. They got another puppy and quickly learned that the puppy was picking up on the older dog’s reactivity. It always happens that way. They hired me to help with the puppy because they thought this dog was a lost cause. She did great with training and they did several private lessons. She walks the neighborhood now without sounding the alarm.
