I recently had the privilege of escorting my brother back home after 18 years. When he told me he was thinking about visiting I immediately dropped everything and planned the trip. However when we got to Haiti the inconsiderate little man threw all my plans aside and dove head first into the culture. He did not want to visit popular landmarks such as Labadie or Milot. He did not care one bit about the buildings. He wanted to mingle with the people, the chofè moto, the ti machann, the moun kap lave machin. That's what makes it happy. And that made me think. Too often we travel to another country just to tick a box or get a stamp. We don't fully immerse into the culture or create a connection with the locals.
