OKHC History Lesson #3 Back to The Loft for this addition of your history lesson. The early 2000s were a wild time, genres were not super defined. Thirty Called Arson was a hardcore band, but pulled from grind and power violence and Dbeat and pretty much anything else. There’s a melodic part in the song “it’s hard to say no when you’ve got a gun to my head” that is some of the prettiest 30 seconds of recorded music, followed by a ridiculous breakdown. It shouldn’t work but it does. It was hardcore made by punks, which is always the best way to get into the genre in my opinion. (Start more punk bands, not beatdown bands, unless you’re over 200 pounds and/or can fight.) Anyway, TCA was lightning in a bottle, they formed as a band called Utopian Death Machine, original vocalist was Mike, who went on to do The Agony Scene. A name change to TCA brought in Zach as the vocalist…the very same Zach who owns Mass Movement. Yall know him now as a quiet, sweet man. I knew him then as a complete psychopath, it ruled and also sucked lol. The band also featured the most talented drummer I’ve ever seen Named Craig, he played in local bands At All Costs and Scales Of Motion. One guitar player was Aaron Kennedy, he played guitar in Enlow and The Tokyo Smash. And of course the other guitar player is none other than John Moreland. If you don’t know who he is then you’re living under a rock. They put out some demos and a full length on Pluto Records, and like so many great bands, broke up too soon. If there was a Mt Rushmore of OKHC they’d be on it. They have music online, go listen to the record You’re Only A Rebel From The Waist Down. Another bit of OKHC lore in this video. Diana is up front, she sang for a band called Still Breathing. She also booked the first “Promcore” which over the years evolved into what is now Flyover Fest. So that’s cool.
