📚 BOOK REVIEW 📚
Book: The Investigation by Jung-Myung Lee
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐✨ (3.8/5)
It's been a long time since I read a book that is so beautifully written and with so much depth.
The story is set in Fukoka prison, Japan 1944 where, Watnabe a teenage guard is assigned to investigate murder of another fellow guard, Sugiyama , infamous for his brutal nature.
As investigation proceeds, we learn of the true nature of Sugiyama, about the life of poet Yun Dong-ju, of his attempts to keep his poetry alive , to give hope to fellow prisoners using the power of words.
This is a captivating story that teaches us that no matter how much someone tries, literature can never be erased from the minds and hearts of people who experienced its beauty.
Fact that Yun Dong-ju was a real poet and his life story is blended into this fiction made me appreciate this story more.
Yes, I had issues with narration and switch in timelines but the beautiful prose makes up for it and I was mesmerized with the writing enough to ignore everything else.

📚 <Shoot Me in the Heart> by Jeong You-jeong
*English title from the film adaptation
A human drama long known as one of a major Korean author’s masterpieces.
17 years later after its first publication, a new cover sparked buzz among younger readers, many drawn to the characters on the cover.
Having read the full story, I actually find the original cover pretty fitting, too.
But I get the appeal of the new one. It lets you imagine the characters more freely.💭
Told from Su-myeong’s perspective, the story follows his growing involvement with the escape-obsessed Seung-min.
Surrounded by vivid characters, it’s a story that makes you laugh—and hits even harder as they struggle to hold onto their sanity and humanity in the face of it all.
If reading in Korean feels challenging, try the 2015 film adaptation.🐯

Book review: #Spit by Jonnie Park. Thanks @thirdstatebooks for the #gifted book (out 4/14).
Was super excited to read this book given my own history with LA Koreatown and I met the author (a long time ago). It’s been amazing to see his music and branching out to podcasts and acting.
I thought the book would be more of a pure memoir but it’s mixed format—some life stories, graphic comics, history of rap battles, insight into his songs, etc. the author is making the audio book now, and I think this book would be better with audio—reading rap isn’t quite the same as hearing it.
LOVED the graphic drawings incorporated and he had a lot of Asian Am artists who did various art for the book.
I was more interested in his back story and didn’t expect as much background on rap. But some chapters stood out esp his chapter on ktown, brought a lot of memories for me esp bc I worked out of the nonprofit he mentions. His immigration story is so important bc he doesn’t have the typical path (Argentina—> Mexico —> US).
If you’re into rap battles and are into the authors music, this book is def for you. He shares what it was like to be an Asian Am rapper and visiting Korea with diff in rap culture there. He also goes over his interactions with other now famous artists like Awkwafina or Anderson Paak or Jay Park. (So, knowing his references helps.)
Once Mr Low Key finishes the book, I’ll see if he will write a review as well 😂 he’s been a more recent fan of the author so it would be interesting to compare our experiences.
I may not be the target audience for that book but I did appreciate learning more about his background!
? Are you a fan of books about music ? Btw @booknerdkat also compiled an amazing list with more books on music!
