Love this so much 😅🐥🥹 those birds are common as muck... but changes my life!! #birdbanding #birdwatching #bird #wildlife #ornithologist

When I heard this audio, I knew it suited the Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus; LOSH) 🩸😏 LOSHs are a widespread* species across North America inhabiting scrublands, grasslands, and other open habitats. Similar in size to an American Robin (T. migratorius) or Northern Cardinal (C. cardinalis), but don’t be fooled by their cute appearance as they are extremely metal birds, aka formidable predators! You can often observe them perched on utility pole wires, where they have an excellent vantage point to hunt a variety of invertebrate and vertebrate prey. Once a prey item is grabbed, LOSHs will impale it on a sharp object such as barb-wire fence or thorns. They have been endearingly given the nickname “Butcherbird” for this impaling behavior, which is an adaptation to the problem of having dainty passerine-perching feet: i.e., lacking talons and the strength to hold down prey to consume. While the prey is impaled, a LOSH can tear manageable pieces off with their powerful hooked bill. For vertebrate prey, the pointy projection on the upper mandible of the LOSH’s bill just behind the hook, called a tomial tooth, delivers the paralyzing blow to the spinal cord. LOSHs truly are an incredible standout species in the order Passeriformes, being both a passerine and a top-level predator! I like to simply describe them as a raptor trapped inside a songbird's body 😁 *Although LOSHs have a large range, they are considered endangered in Canada and listed as endangered or threatened in at least 14 US states. Like most other grassland birds, a large proponent of LOSH decline is because grasslands are one of the most imperiled biomes across the globe. I am trained and have the necessary permits to handle and band birds. Birds are safely captured-released for the purposes of scientific research. #birds #biologist #ornithology #birdresearch #loggerheadshrike #conservation #passeriformes #birdbanding #catchandrelease #womeninstem #fieldwork #explore #upclose #butcherbird #birdsofinstagram #songbird #discoverunder10k #lanius #birdringing #ornithologist #northamericanbirds #grasslandbirds #shrikes #shrike #genomics #science #dexter

ICYWW his handle is @birdbrainuk. He was scouring uninhabited #RedSea islands for rare species of seabirds (or evidence thereof) to inform future #conservation efforts. And he’s an #ornithologist, not a #birdwatcher, thank you very much.
