Life After the Giant🪸🦀
In the abyss, decay becomes habitat—bacterial mats spread, anemones cling, and jellyfish drift like curtains while the seafloor quietly teems around the skeleton.

Do You Know that these "Zombie Worms" have no mouth and no stomach, yet they devour massive whale bones? 🧟♀️🐋
Scientifically known as Osedax (meaning "bone-eater"), these deep-sea scavengers secrete acid to dissolve the hard calcium of skeletons found on the seafloor! The feathery red plumes you see here are their gills, acting like lungs to pull oxygen from the water.
Meanwhile, their root-like structures bore deep into the bone, relying on symbiotic bacteria to digest the fats and proteins inside. They are the ocean's ultimate recycling crew! 🦴♻️

Midweek moment of zen brought to you by bone-eating worms 🦴
Lacking mouths and guts, Osedax worms survive by producing a “root system” that digests the surrounding bone and releases collagen and lipids that the worm then consumes. The roots produced by these unique worms also house symbiotic bacteria that appear to play a crucial role in nutrition.
Since 2004, scientists worldwide have discovered over 30 species of Osedax occurring at depths from 10 to 4,000 meters (32 to 13,123 feet). Various species can colonize a broad array of bones from fish, marine mammals, birds, turtles, and terrestrial mammals. These worms can quickly consume bones, removing visual evidence of a sunken whale skeleton in as little as a decade.
Osedax, the "bone-eating" marine worm, thrives on the remains of dead marine animals by penetrating bones and extracting nutrients. Their unique adaptation has expanded our understanding of nutrient recycling by scavengers in deep-sea ecosystems, making them a significant find in marine biology.

🐋So far, scientists have only found 20-30 #whalefalls , but thousands are expected to exist scattered throughout the ocean.
🐋Osedax worms, also known as "zombie worms," are specialized bone-eating worms that feast on whale carcasses. They have no mouth or gut but instead absorb nutrients through root-like structures that penetrate the bones.
🐋Many of the organisms that inhabit whale falls are unique and have adapted to survive in this extreme environment. They have evolved specialized feeding mechanisms to take advantage of the whale carcass as a food source.
