Clinicians—did you know the otolith could be a culprit in dystonia? Read on 👇🏽 Sensory processing errors in dystonia often contributes to movement symptoms - and the otoliths are a key part of this. Are you taking advantage of this special vestibular organ in your recovery process? 1️⃣Sitting on an exercise ball can be great otolith input and help reduce dystonia. 2️⃣Vertical weighting - providing input for cervical and trunk dystonia. 3️⃣ Asymmetric weighting - walking with a weight - or a bag - on one side can help with neck alignment to vertical—there are those eigenvectors! Clinicians if you are looking for more ideas, more community, more mentorship with folks with the most complex disorders, you should get right over to our Brain Bytes Priority List! When you join we are sending you some of our favorite resources (not found anywhere else!) and you are the first to hear when we open our doors. Drop a Brain below and we will send you the link to join! And of course, let’s hear your thoughts on the otoliths in the comments below! #otolith #vestibularehab #dystoniarecovery #physicaltherapy #occupationaltherapy #psychology #speechtherapy
The Epley Maneuver is a treatment for a condition called BPPV. BPPV causes severe spinning vertigo symptoms and repeating eye movements called nystagmus. BPPV happens when your ear crystals, scientifically known as otoliths, break loose from your inner ear's otolithic membrane, causing them to free float and displace fluid in the inner ear's semicircular canals. The treatment for BPPV is the Epley manuever to get the crystals to move back to the membrane. While the Epley maneuver is a very quick and effective treatment for BPPV, it causes severe vertigo and nystagmus while the maneuver is being performed. #bppv #benignparoxysmalpositionalvertigo #dizziness #vertigo #epley #epleymaneuver #vestibularrehab
What are some common pitfalls when it comes to treating 3PD in vestibular rehab? 1) Not looking at the otoliths. Studies are now suggesting up to 60% of those living with 3PD have otolith dysfunctions. By ignoring the otoliths, we leave a lot on the table. 2) Jumping to visual motion sensitivity training too fast. It's hard to build a resilient system on a faulty foundation. Just because 3PD is a central disorder, doesn't mean they can't ALSO have peripheral deficits. A thorough evaluation that includes assessing the otoliths is key to better outcomes! The otoliths are so amazing! BUT, they are unable to differentiate translation from tilt. (Hair cells bend the same with either). To resolve the ambiguity, inertia detected by the canals and optic flow help to differentiate between tilt and translation. Errors in upright perception and perception of motion are just a couple of the many concepts @jaimyww and I cover in the Positive Spin on Dizziness 2 course! Walking on a SLANTED surface changes vestibular and proprioceptive input for balance 👣⛰️ The otoliths are responsible for detecting tilting and translational movements. Patients who have vestibular dysfunction may have gait instability on slanted surfaces like ramps. Here are some exercises we practice to address this: ➡️ marching on a wedge ➡️ eyes closed on a slant board ➡️ stepping into/off of a slant board (up and down hill) ❗️BONUS: add angular head movement to activate the semicircular canals #vestibulartherapy #vertigo #dizziness #imbalance #instability #physicaltherapy
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is a peripheral vestibular disorder caused by displaced otoconia within the semicircular canals of the inner ear. This displacement disrupts normal vestibular input, leading to vertigo, imbalance, and motion sensitivity with changes in head position. Our therapists are trained in vestibular rehabilitation utilizing canalith repositioning maneuvers to guide otoconia back to the utricle, often resulting in rapid resolution of symptoms and improved functional mobility. During this treatment, Dr. Lani utilized mastoid oscillation during the repositioning maneuver to help dislodge otoconia adhered to the cupola, facilitating their movement back into the utricle! 🌀🌀🌀 #BPPV #VertigoRelief #VestibularRehab #DizzinessTreatment #BalanceTherapy #PhysicalTherapy #NeuroPT #VestibularTherapy #CanalithRepositioning #EpleyManeuver #SemontManeuver #MastoidOscillation #Cupulolithiasis #Otoliths #VestibularSystem #InnerEarHealth #VestibularPT #VestibularDisorders #NeuroRehab #MotionSensitivity #BalanceRecovery #PTforDizziness #VestibularSpecialist #VestibularCare #DizzyNoMore #VertigoRecovery #FunctionalMobility #BalanceMatters #VestibularAwareness #neurophysicaltherapy

Here’s how I do my larval fish dissections! Even many people in the larval fish world ask me how I do this, because the larvae are so small (I usually get fish 3-6mm) and their otoliths even smaller (smaller than a grain of sand). For those who don’t work with fish larvae every day I imagine it is even more difficult to envision this process. Otoliths are fish earbones and are often used to determine the age of a fish, but I’m using them for their chemical signatures that can tell me more about spawning habits. This information is critical to making informed management decisions to keep these populations healthy long term. Ask me anything about fish larvae and their earbones! #fishlarvae #larvalfish #earlylifehistory #bluefintuna #atlanticbluefintuna #spawningsite #chemicaloceanography #biogeochemistry #stableisotopeanalysis #otolith #fishearbones #otoliths #marinebiology #marinebiologist #oceanscience #fisheriesmanagement #fishscience #scicomm #biology #fish #oceanlife #microscopy #leicamicroscopes #sciencetools
Fish Hearing Is Stranger Than You Think Fish hear with internal bones called otoliths. These bones grow rings that show their age. They connect to a lateral line that helps fish sense sound across their body. This makes their hearing very different from humans. Follow for more fascinating insights into how fish senses work differently than ours! #FishSenses #Otoliths #DrTimsAquatics

Aging Atlantic bluefin tuna using otoliths! Last week, we had the opportunity to present to some marine sciences students at Brunswick High School about our research efforts. Dr. Walt Golet took them through his education path, and then broke down some of our research including how to age an Atlantic bluefin tuna! We also did a dissection as well where some of the students actually extracted otoliths!! Thank you to the Brunswick High School students and staff for being so welcoming!📝🎣🧬 #universityofmaine #pelagicfisherieslab #tuna #otoliths #umaineresearch #sciences #marine #bluefin #students #education #college #umaine #aging #fisheries #research #conservation #fishing
