We are obsessed with the massive, soulful murals that tell the story of Curaçao’s heritage. Otrobanda is often called the “Soul of Willemstad” because of its incredible street art, much of which was brought to life by the Kaya Kaya movement—a local initiative that transformed these historic streets into a vibrant open-air museum. Did you know that “Kaya Kaya” literally means “street by street” in Papiamento? 🏘️ What started as a simple neighborhood cleanup in 2018 has transformed into a massive community movement. Before their world-famous street festivals, the movement spends weeks restoring historic buildings, fixing potholes, and painting these incredible murals to breathe new life into the district. It’s not just art—it’s a neighborhood “glow-up” led by the people who live here! You don’t need a tour bus to find these treasures.
