When the OT student copies your session ideas🤗All jokes aside, we’ve loved having Sammi with us over the past 5 weeks as she’s been shadowing our OTs in the clinic. She has been such a wonderful addition to the team—always helpful, engaged, and so natural with the kids (who absolutely adore her!). We’re so proud of all she’s achieved during her placement and wish her all the very best for her final year at uni next year. One of my biggest regrets as an OT student was not going through with applying for the DOE scholarship. If you didn’t already know, this scholarship pays your full ride of grad school (look into the details because there’s a catch). To my defense, I was set on getting into the hand therapy area of practice. However, after graduation, I realized the reality of it all and when I was offered a position at a school setting I couldn’t pass up the great opportunity. When looking at the grand scheme of things and how I want to live my life- working in the school department was a better fit for me and the lifestyle I want to have. Having said that, although the benefits of working in the school system are great, it’ll take me longer to take care of my loans because I didn’t apply for the scholarship. So, if asked what’s my advice for OT grad students, which I have been, I’d say to search for scholarships and consider applying to them, regardless of the setting you think you’ll end up working at. If you’re an OT student scrolling this page because you’re terrified about student loans… You’re not alone 🫶🏾 I graduated OT school with $270,000 in student loans and honestly had no clue how repayment worked. I remember thinking “Yeah I’ll probably just die with these” ☠️ And when I did try to create a repayment plan, I felt instantly overwhelmed Income-driven plans, PSLF, refinancing, tax bombs - none of this was explained in school My original plan was to pay the minimum for 20 years and live my life because “everyone has student loans” But once I fell down the personal finance rabbit hole…everything changed And now I share everything I wish someone told me before graduation. The #1 thing to remember: Student loans feel complicated…but they’re not impossible to navigate. And the more you understand your options, the less scary they become. To say I was stressed was an understatement 😥 When I was doing my clinical work as an OT student in peds, I was constantly in my head trying to come up with new interventions and activity ideas for every single client, every single day of every single week! I was far into my clinicals when my supervisor noticed how stressed I was and then told me I didn’t have to reinvent the wheel all the time (like why she didn’t tell me that a long time ago *side eye* 👀👀) It’s ok to repeat activities or even repeat whole sessions! As long as what you are working on is still in alignment with the child’s goals and as long as the child is still having fun… that’s all that matters! If you have been feeling stumped with activity ideas be sure to get a copy of the “Early Intervention Starter Kit!”.
