While the mother Great Gray Owl stays at the nest to incubate, and then shelter the young owlets, the father owl is responsible for feeding both mom and the new babies. This mostly nocturnal owl usually hunts all night and then much of the day to provide enough food for the growing family. The father patiently stalks voles, mice, chipmunks and other rodents and even some birds, using its fantastic hearing to pinpoint its prey. He swoops in on silent wings and grabs the unlucky prey using sharp talons. He then flys back to the nest and delivers the food to the mother who feeds herself and the baby owls, as seen here in @nathanclarkwildlife’s fantastic clip! Occasionally, if the mother hears a mouse near the nest, she will swoop down from the nest and grab it, then quickly return. Nathan Clark documented this Great Gray Owl family for four years—and one of his videos earned him an Honorable Mention in this year’s Audubon Photography Awards.
