Everyone is saying the problem is scale. I disagree.
One of the world’s most powerful galleries, Pace Gallery, has just announced major cuts. And it made me think much less about the gallery itself and much more about how greater competition in the art market could benefit everyone: artists, workers, and even the galleries themselves.
I’d love to hear your thoughts!👇

LEE UFAN • In Venice this summer, don’t miss Lee Ufan’s major solo exhibition at San Marco Art Centre.
Dia Art Foundation presents a major solo exhibition of work by Lee Ufan at SMAC Venice (San Marco Art Centre), an official Collateral Event of the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. Curated by Jessica Morgan, Dia’s Nathalie de Gunzburg Director, and soon-to-be Director of Tate, the landmark exhibition is on view until November 22, 2026.
Developed in close partnership with the artist, the Venice exhibition traces the evolution of Lee’s iconic visual language. Staged across eight of SMAC Venice’s galleries at the Procuratie in Piazza San Marco, the presentation brings together a striking selection of works from over the last six decades of his career, including new and historical paintings, a large-scale installation from the 1960s, and three new site-specific commissions.
Listen to Lee Ufan as he reflects on the exhibition and creative journey.

On view at our gallery in Los Angeles, "Fred Wilson: Dramatis Personae" situates the artist’s Murano glass works within his broader inquiries into the ways Blackness has been coded in the construction of Western art history.

In an ever-changing art market, Pace Gallery announced it will close its Hong Kong exhibition space at H Queen’s later this month, citing slower market growth and declining demand. The decision reflects broader shifts in the region’s art scene, as several international galleries reassess their physical presence amid economic uncertainty and changing collector behavior in Asia. Pace confirmed it will not renew its lease after Alejandro Piñeiro Bello’s exhibition ends on October 18. A spokesperson noted that the space “is no longer serving us,” adding that with the lease ending, the gallery will “take the opportunity to exit.” Despite the closure, Pace will retain its offices in Hong Kong and Beijing to continue supporting artists, collectors, and projects across the region.
Global art sales reached an all time high of $67.8 billion last year.
So, who’s to thank?
Well, in large part, it’s the bustling art fairs, market globalization, and busy exhibits at galleries like PACE that have all contributed to the rising market.
PACE Gallery is one of the most influential galleries on earth, with long-standing relationships with top contemporary artists from Agnes Martin to Mark Rothko and Yoshitomo Nara.
We explored their current exhibitions (which are all free to the public) to reflect on their role in the art market.

I’ve known rivers:
I’ve known rivers ancient as the world and older than the flow of human blood in human veins.
My soul has grown deep like the rivers.
I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young.
I built my hut near the Congo and it lulled me to sleep.
I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it.
I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln went down to New Orleans, and I’ve seen its muddy bosom turn all golden in the sunset.
I’ve known rivers:
Ancient, dusky rivers.
My soul has grown deep like the rivers.
⁃ Langston Hughes
