… What will you learn during the workshop: How to process typha capensis for papermaking. This processing is applied to leaf, grass and straw fibre. How and why to make formation aid. How to form the paper with formation aid. How to couch the paper. How to dry the paper. How to surface size the paper for use in drawing, printing and watercolour. Day 1 Tuesday Discuss the use of Typha capensis as papermaking fibre. Processing of the fibre. Processing of mucilage used as a formation aid. Discuss the importance of mucilage. Day 2 Wednesday Further processing of fibre, which entails hand-beating.  Demonstration of how to form paper from the fibre and the formation aid with a mould and deckle and couching. Day 3 Thursday Participants make paper the whole day. Day 4 Friday Pressing of paper to remove water. Ways to dry the paper. How to make sizing of starch and gelatin.  Ways to size the paper. What is Typha capensis? Typha capensis commonly known as Cape Bulrush, is a robust, aquatic, perennial herb native to southern Africa. It grows up to 2.5 meters tall from a fast-spreading rhizome, forming dense colonies in marshes, dams, lakes, and slow-moving water bodies. For ages I’ve kept my old uni notes and since graduating I haven’t really had a use for them. Until now at least when I thought that shredding, soaking and then blending them would be a good use for them. Turns out it was and I’ve spent the last 3 days making new paper out of them. My first attempt at recycling and making paper from a home made deckle. The mesh needs an upgrade as it wad too stretchy and the pulp stuck stuck to it, how ever I managed to get a small batch done, just need to press them now. Saving the left over pulp and water for another go with a better mesh next week. #handmadepaper #recycledpaper #texture #fineart #learning
