She was watching a movie The Lion King with her papa.. laughing, munching, fully into it. Then that scene came. Mufasa was gone. Simba was alone. 3rd wheel for life. Our eldest will be a senior in high school this fall and he is moving full steam ahead toward college. He will be the first among our kids to fly the coop and I have mixed feelings about it. I’m excited for him because college was one of the most enjoyable and growth-filled seasons of my life, but I mourn the loss of our family as we know it. I don’t know yet whether he’ll move abroad or cross-country or remain local but he will always have a place to come home to. After college, I moved home 3 times, including one stint with my husband and newborn while our house was being renovated. I relished the help and support of my parents and my hope is that my children will feel that continued kinship as well. They say “home is where the heart is” and if “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach,” then perhaps the secret to keeping my kids around is food.
