Did you know that some seeds need light to germinate?
It’s true! Not all seeds want to be buried. In fact, for certain varieties, covering them with soil can actually prevent sprouting.
These seeds are typically very small, and light acts as a signal that they’re close enough to the soil surface to grow successfully.
✨ Some examples of seeds that need light to germinate (or should be surface-sown):
Lettuce
Petunias
Snapdragons
Begonias
Lobelia
Coleus
Alyssum
Impatiens
Foxglove
Verbena
Dusty Miller
Geranium
🌞 How to plant light-dependent seeds:
✔️ Place seeds on the soil surface
✔️ Gently press them in - don’t cover
✔️ Mist with water to keep soil moist
✔️ Provide bright light right away
💡 A clear seed-starting tray or dome can help retain moisture while still letting light through.
⚠️ Important tip:
Most seeds do need to be covered so always check the seed packet for specific instructions. When in doubt, the packet knows best!
Starting seeds correctly from day one makes all the difference, and high-quality seeds paired with proper planting techniques lead to better, more reliable germination!

🐝 Want to help support pollinators in your garden?
Bees, butterflies, and other pollinators play a big role in helping many plants produce fruits and seeds. The good news is that even a few simple choices in your garden can make a difference!
Here are a few easy ways to help:
🌼 Plant flowers in groups so pollinators can easily spot them
🌸 Choose single blooms with open centers that make nectar and pollen easy to reach
🌻 Grow flowers that bloom all season to provide food from spring through fall
🚫 Avoid spraying while plants are blooming when pollinators are most active
💧 Add a shallow water source like a small dish with pebbles
Flowers like zinnias, cosmos, sunflowers, and coneflowers are all great choices that help attract bees and butterflies to the garden!
Even small gardens can help create a welcoming space for pollinators!
