The Philippine Parol has a Hidden History?!
Did you know the Philippine parol has a hidden history?
The parol, or Filipino Christmas lantern, originated during the Spanish colonial era. Its name comes from the Spanish word “farol,” meaning lantern. Back then, streets were dark, so people carried simple bamboo and paper lanterns to light their way to dawn Masses, also called Simbang Gabi.
Then in 1908, Francisco Estanislao created the first modern five-pointed star parol using bamboo and Japanese paper. This design became the classic Filipino Christmas lantern. The star shape now symbolizes the Star of Bethlehem, which guided the Three Wise Men to Jesus.
Over time, parols evolved with electric lights and giant festival designs, and they still light up homes and hearts, keeping Christmas magical.

In the Filipino culture, a parol is an ornamental lantern used during Christmas! The name, “parol” comes from the Spanish word for lantern, “farol”. In the past, a parol would hang in the windows/front of homes to light the way for people to get to Simbang Gabi, “Night Mass”!⭐️
