You can be completely right about a problem and still be stuck, because you're so busy proving you're right about it that you never bother looking past it. The people who actually get somewhere aren't the ones with the best handle on what's wrong. They're the ones who get tired of being right and start looking for what's underneath it instead. Patch Adams is loosely based on the real life of Dr. Hunter Patch Adams, who founded the Gesundheit Institute. Robin Williams was 47 when he played Patch, and the real Adams later said Williams was the only actor he wanted playing him. The character of Arthur Mendelson, played by Harold Gould, was based on a real patient Adams knew during his own time in a mental institution.
