Three years ago, I knew what I wanted to do with my life. What I didn’t know was how much I still had to learn. Over the last three years, I’ve spent countless hours studying sewing, fashion design, and patternmaking, often realizing that what I was learning in class wasn’t enough and that I had to keep teaching myself beyond it. Today, I work as a pattern maker and help create garments for fashion brands, but the thing I’ve always wanted most was to teach people how clothes are made and give them the tools to create their own. So this is a very special moment for me. What started as a sketch on a Post-it note has become my first sewing pattern. The Mycelium Skirt is now available on Etsy. If you had met me during Fashion Design school, you probably wouldn’t have guessed I’d one day build an online sewing academy. Pattern making was one of the subjects that intimidated me the most. I did enough to pass, but if I’m being honest, I always imagined that one day I’d simply hire a pattern maker instead. Life took me into different jobs after varsity, some of which weren’t even in the fashion industry. But I never lost the desire to create. When I decided I wanted to teach sewing instead of selling clothes, I realised something… I couldn’t teach what I didn’t fully understand. So I started again. I revisited my old notes, read pattern books, deconstructed garments I loved, drafted the same patterns over and over, and slowly began simplifying everything in a way that finally made sense to me. For me, the biggest obstacles were the maths and the complicated terminology. Once I simplified those, pattern making stopped feeling intimidating and started becoming something I genuinely enjoyed. That’s exactly why AM Sewing Academy is being built the way it is. It’s not because I learned quickly… But because I remember what it feels like when nothing seems to click. If you’re feeling defeated right now, don’t let that convince you you’re not capable. Sometimes the best teachers are simply the people who refused to give up. 🤍 #PatternMaking #BeginnerSewing #LearnToSew #SewingEducation #AMSewingAcademy

1. FASHION DESIGNER A hand holding a silver mechanical pencil / sketch pen. This is the ideation stage - where the design starts on paper. 2. PATTERN MAKER A hand holding tailor's chalk over pattern paper with a French curve ruler. This is the technical brain - converting design into accurate patterns. 3. TAILOR A hand with a thimble and needle & thread. This represents the hand-sewing, finishing and construction skill. 4. CUTTER A hand holding big golden fabric scissors cutting through cloth. The master cutter - one wrong cut can ruin the whole fabric. 5. AARI EMBROIDERER A hand doing aari work with needle on a sheer fabric frame with beads and sequins scattered. Very close to your specialization - the detailed handwork that adds value and luxury. 6. TEXTILE DYER A hand stained with deep indigo blue, holding dyed yarn. Represents the very first stage - the textile and color creation. The message is clear: Fashion is not machine-made, it's human-made. Every piece is teamwork of many skilled artisans. #explorepage✨
The Franco Toolkit supports the remaining infrastructure of NYC’s Garment District. Every tool in the kit has a purpose. Pattern paper. Muslin. Chalk. Rulers. Curves. Tracing wheel. Carbon paper. Pins. Marking tools. These are not decorative objects. They are the same working instruments Franco has used throughout his entire career — the tools he has relied on for 72 years as a master pattern maker and tailor, including 60 years in New York City’s Garment District. They are the tools used to study a garment by hand. To read its construction. To understand its proportions. To transfer knowledge from fabric to paper. The toolkit is sourced from long-standing suppliers in and around NYC’s Garment District. It was built to support Franco’s rub-off method, not to become merchandise. Because the method cannot be separated from the tools. The tools cannot be separated from the district. And the district cannot be separated from the people who kept this knowledge alive. This is a working toolkit. Built for use. Built for preservation. Built from the same tools Franco has trusted his entire life.
