Catholics believe that small, voluntary sacrifices like fasting, giving something up, and offering discomfort can be united to Jesus sacrifice. I know many people who are always trying to figure what they can offer up. Thankfully, I live in chronic pain, so I never have to worry about that. I guess some of us are just God’s favorites. 🤣🤣

The Hidden Meaning of the Purple Halo in the Divine Mercy Image
Fr. Matthew Tomeny reminds us that nothing in the Divine Mercy Image is accidental. Every detail was carefully directed by St. Faustina under Christ’s instruction — even the faint purple hue outlining the halo above Our Lord’s head. At first glance, it might appear to be simple shading or light, but this touch of color carries profound theological symbolism.
In Scripture and Sacred Tradition, purple is the color of both royalty and penance. It reminds us that Christ is the King of Mercy, reigning from the throne of the Cross. But it also points us to the Sacrament of Penance, the gateway to His mercy and healing. Just as we wear purple in the penitential seasons of Advent and Lent, this same hue in the Divine Mercy Image invites us to approach Jesus with contrite hearts, repent of our sins, and receive the grace that restores our souls.
Through confession, we participate in His royal mercy — a mercy that not only forgives but transforms. As St. Faustina wrote, “The greater the sinner, the greater the right he has to My mercy” (Diary, 723). When we live in this spirit of repentance, embracing both humility and hope, Christ promises us something far greater than earthly reward: the eternal crown of glory.
The purple halo, then, is not merely artistic — it’s theological. It proclaims that the King who suffered for us also reigns in mercy, inviting us to share in His victory through the Sacrament of Confession. “If we suffer with Him, we shall also reign with Him” (2 Timothy 2:12).
