Wilson's Phalarope females flip the script in a number of ways. Their plumage is more colorful than the males and they are polyandrous, meaning they breed with multiple males per season. Once they've selected a mate, they lay up to four eggs, and then move on to find another male to reproduce with, leaving the male phalarope to incubate and rear eggs/young.This breeding strategy is found in less than 1% of bird species and allows for females to lay up to 16 eggs per year. #GirlBoss 📷: USFWS

Re-watching my poor attempts of keeping the red-necked phalarope in frame to take videos while it was eating give me nausea 😂😂😂 But why it was moving like that? Well this phalarope has a very interesting feeding behaviour! The birds twirl on the surface like dancers, spinning and pecking, continuously in circles 😳 in this way invertebrates are brought to the surface! 👉 What's the most interesting feeding behaviour you saw in a bird? Let me know in the comments! ( Ethical disclaimer: video taken in a natural feeding pool, not a breeding one, next to a public road ) #redneckedphalarope #phalarope #shetlandislands #shetland #birdphotography #birdwatching #birdwatchingworld #wildlifephotography #funnybird

SFBBO’s latest research reveals critical insights into phalarope populations in SF South Bay’s salt ponds. Between June and September 2024, our migration surveys tracked 4,835 phalaropes across 32 sites, and for the first time we gathered foraging data to assess how salinity affects feeding behavior. While phalarope counts remain well below baseline values, our research identified 6 new potential habitat sites that could be important for future monitoring. We’re continuing this vital research in 2025 - read the full study in our Linktree! @southbayrestore #SFBBO #Phalarope #BirdScience #SFBay #WetlandRestoration #STEM

. Red-necked Phalarope 🕊️🌱 Red-necked Phalarope (Phalaropus lobatus) is a beautiful tiny wader and one that, as a breeding species, has a preference for waterbodies with plenty of emergent vegetation. They eat mainly aquatic invertebrates such as zooplankton, and some flying insects. Their classic foraging behavior is to sit on the surface of the water and spin rapidly in circles, causing food to be brought to the surface. #birds #birdvideo #birdwatching #audubon #natgeowildlife #naturelovers #bird_perfection #birdofinstagram #natureisbeautiful #nuts_about_birds #birder #birders_gallery #birdwatchers #best_birds_of_ig #bird #birdsofinstagram #birding #bird_brilliance #birdsonearth #phalarope #redneckedphalarope #iranwildlife #سماع #meditation #مراقبه

So many bugs = so many birds! Amazing to see the Great Salt Lake full of beautiful migrating shorebirds, feeding and resting for their journey. Some of the species were familiar to me from here at home and some were new to me. (Oh I thought we had a lot of bugs here in South Carolina…check My Story today to see what the bug situation was like…it was also amazing ! 😂) #blackbelliedplover #redneckedphalarope #dunlin #greatsaltlake #phalarope #shorebirds #shorebirdmurmuration #murmuration
