If you were born and raised in Hawaiʻi, you know Pidgin. Even if you can’t speak it, you hear it. The language emerged on Hawaiʻi’s sugar plantations during the 19th century when indentured laborers from Japan, Korea, China, Portugal, the Philippines and other nations were brought in to work alongside Hawaiians. Back then, it was known as Pidgin Hawaiian. But as more English schools were built and more of the laborers’ children attended them, there was a shift in the language, and it became Pidgin English. This scene is taken from PBS Hawaiʻi Presents: “Proof of Loyalty: Kazuo Yamane and the Nisei Soldiers of Hawaiʻi.” The documentary explores the power of diversity in a time of war, focusing on a Hawaiʻi man who played a crucial role.
