Not all Pilates classes are good classes. Here are 7 things that instantly make me question a class. 🚩 No corrections or individual feedback Even one small cue can completely change how an exercise feels. Without feedback, it’s easy to repeat the same movement patterns without realizing it. 🚩 The instructor spends the entire class exercising with you Demonstrating an exercise is helpful. But if they’re doing the whole workout, they’re missing the chance to watch your technique, give corrections and make the class about you—not them. 🚩 No one asks about injuries, pain or pregnancy before class A quick conversation at the beginning helps an instructor adapt exercises when needed and creates a much safer experience. 🚩 Everyone is doing the exact same version A good class includes progressions and regressions. Beginners and experienced clients rarely need the exact same challenge. 🚩 No one talks about alignment Simple cues about your rib cage, pelvis, shoulders or neck can completely change how your body moves and where you feel the exercise. 🚩 Breath is treated like an afterthought Your breath isn’t just there to relax you—it helps with core engagement, control and movement quality. 🚩 The class never slows down Pilates isn’t about fitting as many exercises as possible into 45 minutes. Slowing down often builds more strength, control and body awareness. Every instructor has their own teaching style, but these are some of the things I believe make the biggest difference to both your results and your experience. What’s the biggest green flag that makes you want to come back to a Pilates class? šŸ‘‡ #pilates #pilatesinstructor #pilatescommunity #pilatespractice #pilatesjourney
Who’s been here since I started posting on Instagram back in 2017? Or in 2020 with Pilates classes filmed in my bedroom at my parents and where I had to ban anyone else from using the internet so it was strong enough for coaching calls? šŸ˜… I was in the thick of my health downward spiral and creating this space was the BEST thing I’ve ever done. At the time sharing my own health journey was such a healing and powerful outlet giving me some control. I had no idea where it would take me, the people I would get to meet throughout or that it would become my job. Let alone the fact I wrote a book!! Cannot believe it’s been over 8 years since I started Insta, and 5 years of online classes and coaching. You’ve seen me through many eras - including my most chaotic yet, mum era šŸ˜… thank you for being here. I’m extending my Pilates sales for 2 more days as I know it’s so annoying when you forget and then miss out! 25% off your first 3 months, available until 3rd December. A 30min full body Pilates class under the sun at @sunset_tennisclub šŸŽ¾ it’s almost May and we are opting to take our Pilates Classes outside… any guesses what that means is coming? šŸ’ššŸŒæšŸƒšŸŒ³
I would walk out if these Pilates classes: 😬🚩 Not every Pilates class needs to look exactly the same, but there are some things I’d consider major red flags — especially when you’re paying for an instructor-led class. 1. Your instructor does the ENTIRE class with you Your instructor should be watching, observing and teaching — not simply doing their own workout at the front. If they’re moving the whole time, who is watching your alignment/form? 2. No corrections, alignment or individual attention Pilates is all about precision. Your instructor should be looking at alignment, technique and movement quality, and giving you corrections where needed. 3. No progressions, regressions or modifications Every body and every experience level is different. A good instructor should be able to make an exercise more accessible — or more challenging — depending on the person in front of them. 4. The class is rushed If you’re flying through exercises just to keep up with the music, that’s not the controlled movement Pilates is known for. Slow down. Control the movement. Actually feel what you’re doing. 5. The music is running the class 🚩 There’s nothing wrong with music in Pilates, but when the instructor is choreographing exercises to the beat, rushing transitions or counting to the music instead of cueing the movement… The movement should come first. 6. No breath, neutral spine/pelvis or foundational cueing Breathing and alignment aren’t optional extras in Pilates. Your instructor should be teaching you how to find and maintain your neutral pelvis/spine and use your breath to support the movement. 7. It’s basically HIIT in disguise If the entire class is designed around speed, sweat, burnout and seeing how many reps you can squeeze in… you might be doing HIIT, not Pilates. Pilates can absolutely be challenging — but the challenge comes from control, precision, strength and endurance, not simply moving as fast as possible. Pilates isn’t just a collection of exercises, it’s a MethodšŸ¤. #pilates #holistichealth #lifestyle #strength #flexibility
✨ If you’re a Millenial Mom… read on! āž”ļø THIS is why dumbbell swings are my ā€œHEROā€ exercise this week… 🤩 You’ll get HIIT RESULTS minus the jumping….. šŸ™‚As a certified fitness trainer who specialises in ā€œmom fitnessā€ — I’ve noticed lots of moms prefer low impact exercise and think HIIT is out of the question. This is false. āŒ āœ… High intensity interval training does *not* mean high impact (like jumping)…. It’s about intensity… AKA how hard you are working. 🩰 The first exercise I’m doing in this video is a basic exercise I see in barre and Pilates classes a lot. It’s great. But it falls short if that’s all you’re doing. PliĆ© squat pulses are fabulous for a warm-up…. But! šŸ’Ŗ If you want results into your 30’s and 40’s… you need to pick up the heavier dumbbells… and you need to do HIIT if you want a healthy šŸ«€ heart and you don’t have a lot of time. HIIT is efficient and perfect for busy moms. ā˜‘ļø Save & try this exercise. Add it to your next workout!! ā˜‘ļø Try 3 sets of 12. For reference… I am using a 20 pound dumbbell. But start off with 5 or 8 pounds and work your way up! šŸ‘ø If you live in Charlotte — come train with me at Harris Y Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6am. @ymcacharlotte @ymca šŸ“² If you aren’t local to CLT… I’d still love to be your trainer inside the @strongsexymammas fitness & nutrition app….just for moms! ✨ link in bio for deets. #charlottenc #charlottemoms #momswhorun #momswhoworkout #momswhorunandlift #millenialsmoms #certifiedtrainer

When you hear the cue 100 times but you just need the visual šŸ‘† One thing I’ve learnt over the years of teaching is you can say ā€œshoulders downā€ to your blue in the face but if someone’s scapula is not gliding on the back freely as it should and allowing the humerus to move efficiently this cue will only exacerbate the tension in the shoulders. šŸ‘‰I hear this cue a lot in Pilates classes and i completely understand the purpose of it. Which is usually to release tension from the top of the shoulders and neck. šŸ‘‰But here’s why this may not be working for you and it might be time to change the approach and look at how the scapula(shoulder blade) and the head of the humerus move in a rhythm together. I find what helps is focusing on increasing range of movement around the shoulder joint with a strong emphasise on breath to help release tension and find the best alignment for the shoulders through movement šŸ’Ŗ
Want your Pilates classes to be waitlisted? šŸ‘‡ As someone whose classes regularly fill up in advance, I’ve learned that getting people into your class is about SO much more than knowing how to teach Pilates. Here are 5 things I don’t do: 1. Impress people with choreography. Fancy moves ≠ a better class. If your students are spending the whole class trying to figure out what their arms and legs are supposed to be doing, they’re not actually enjoying the workout. 2. Have a generic identity. Who are you as an instructor? Are you the high-energy instructor? The soft-but-firm one? The fun, slightly chaotic one? The calm, grounded one? šŸ˜‚ There is no right answer. But ā€œgeneric Pilates instructorā€ is not an identity. People should be able to walk into your class and immediately know: this is HER class. 3. Forget about music. Your music matters. A LOT. If you’re teaching an energetic class but your playlist makes everyone want to fall asleep… we have a problem. šŸ˜‚ Music changes the energy of the entire room. 4. Impassive body language. Your students are constantly taking cues from you — even when you’re not speaking. Your posture. Your facial expressions. Your energy. How you move around the room. If you’re standing there looking bored, nervous or disconnected, your students will feel it. 5. LOOK LIKE I’M HAVING A BAD TIME This might be the most important one.Your students should feel like you genuinely love being there with them. Smile. Dance. Hype them up. Celebrate them. Because energy is contagious. People don’t just come back for the workout. They come back for how your class makes them feel. That’s what turns a good instructor into an instructor with a waitlist.
