Imagine the feeling of worry that washes over you when you find out someone you love has been diagnosed with cancer. The shock, the fear, and all the questions that suddenly start racing through your mind. What happens next? Will they be okay? How do we get through this? Cancer doesn’t just affect the person diagnosed. It ripples through families, friends, and communities. I’ve seen this firsthand through two incredible women in my life. Both my cousin and my close friend faced their battles with immense courage and grace. Princess Margaret Cancer Centre played an important role in their journeys. It’s where my cousin received her radiation treatment, and where my friend had her double mastectomy. They received exceptional care, and just as important, they were filled with hope. This year, I’m deeply honoured to contribute to The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation’s Doves of Hope Campaign by creating a sculpture that represents hope, healing, and the unshakeable spirit of individuals like them. Every texture and curve in the piece will symbolize their resilience — the quiet strength it takes to face each day, the courage to embrace healing, and the beauty that emerges from hardship. This sculpture is a tribute to all who have been touched by cancer. It is a reminder that even in the most difficult moments, hope continues to fly. My name is Tania LaCaria. I’m a multidisciplinary artist specializing in abstract painting and found-object sculpture. My work explores the concept of emotional paradox - the idea that two conflicting emotions can exist at the same time - and I’m honoured to be contributing to the 25th anniversary of the Doves of Hope for @thepmcf where I’ll be creating a painting that explores the paradoxical emotions that are a part of the cancer journey. I’ve spent time at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre supporting loved ones undergoing treatment and the word ‘bittersweet’ comes to mind when I look back on that time. No one “wants” to be a patient at The Princess Margaret - there’s nothing scarier than a cancer diagnosis - but there’s a great sense of relief that comes from being in the care of The Princess Margaret team...it’s a bittersweet reality. Both my grandparents were treated there. My grandfather discovered his cancer too late, but he faced it with strength surrounded by care and compassion. My grandmother’s story was different. Thanks to early-detection research and the dedicated team at The Princess Margaret, she had more time, time we’ll always be grateful for. To be a part of The Princess Margaret community is an incredible privilege, even though having to be a part of this community at all comes along with some heartbreak. Cancer is hard... everything about the journey is a challenge. But the @thepmcf ‘s Doves of Hope is a reminder of hope. And that’s the paradox I’ll be exploring in this work. I’m honoured to have the opportunity to express myself through my art, especially for a cause and campaign I believe in. This week, our Communications Intern Gracie whipped up some deliciousTzatziki using fresh dill from our Children's Exploration Garden and cucumbers from our Farm Stand.
