Recovery doesn’t stop when the surgery ends. Proper sleep plays an important role in healing. Avoid these common sleeping mistakes to protect your surgical site and support faster recovery.

If you’re asking, “Why am I so tired after surgery?” — you’re not alone.
Post-operative fatigue is one of the most common (and frustrating) parts of recovery.
Here’s what’s happening:
Your immune system is actively repairing tissue.
Inflammation requires energy.
Anesthesia disrupts normal rhythms.
Muscle mass decreases with inactivity.
Stress hormones shift.
Your body is not weak.
It is reallocating resources.
Think of it this way:
Healing is metabolically expensive.
The solution isn’t pushing harder.
It’s:
• Nourishing with protein
• Moving gently
• Respecting sleep
• Allowing time
You are not behind.
You are healing.
Save this if you need the reminder. 🌿

Don't ignore sudden worsening after your recent surgery! 🚩🚑

Complications after surgery are not always random.
The patients I worry about most are usually the ones who:
stay in bed too much,
skip deep breathing and their incentive spirometer,
take too little pain medicine or too much,
ignore constipation,
do not drink enough fluids,
take pain medicine on an empty stomach,
let pets near their incision,
slack on hygiene,
make poor food choices right after surgery,
do not follow activity precautions,
and wait too long to ask for help.
Recovery is not just about getting through surgery.
It is about what you do after.
Small choices matter. A lot.

Sleeping slightly elevated for the first couple of weeks helps your lungs expand more easily, allowing you to take deeper breaths and maintain good oxygen levels. Better oxygenation supports healing and can also help reduce that anxious, tight feeling many people experience in the first few days after surgery.
Keeping your upper body elevated and avoiding side or stomach sleeping also helps reduce pressure and strain on the surgical area. This can lower the risk of bleeding complications like hematomas and helps protect your incisions while everything is still very delicate.
In the early stages of recovery, positioning matters more than people realize. A simple wedge pillow or a supportive pillow setup can make a big difference in both comfort and healing

After surgery, your body is healing—and knowing what’s normal matters.
Increased pain, swelling, redness, or fever should never be ignored. Early attention can make all the difference in protecting your recovery and your results.
A safe recovery starts with awareness, proper care, and the right support in place.

After surgery, recovery shouldn’t be done alone. One of the most important parts of preparing for a procedure is having a reliable 2-week post-op buddy to support you during the early stages of healing.
Your post-op buddy should attend your pre-op and post-op appointments with you so they can listen, take notes, and help make sure all instructions from your surgeon are followed correctly.
They are also responsible for driving you home from surgery and to follow-up appointments, since you cannot safely drive after anesthesia or while taking pain medications.
During the first days and weeks of recovery, your buddy should help with tracking medication schedules, assisting with getting in and out of bed, helping you walk or reposition safely, and preparing light meals while making sure you stay hydrated.
If your procedure requires it, they may also need to help with surgical garments, fajas, compression wear, or drains, as well as assist with simple daily tasks like grabbing items, light laundry, or tidying up so you can focus on healing.
Your buddy should also help monitor for concerning symptoms such as unusual swelling, fever, excessive pain, or anything that may require contacting your surgeon.
Recovery is not a solo journey. Planning the right support system ahead of time can make your healing process safer, smoother, and far less stressful.
