When reading through third wave/modern feminist theories, i wondered where this conceptualization of gender fluidity originated from: enter post-structuralism. An ideology which debuted in the 20th century, post-structuralism iterates that all ideas, concepts in our world are expressed through language, which in of itself is heavily influenced by societal norms, beliefs, and values. It is believed that all sorts of things are given an identity and meaning through the construction of language. Subsequently, beyond linguistic representation, there is no true meaning to any concept. With all of this in mind, the post-structural aspect of modern feminism deconstructs both the masculine, dominated nature of society. These feminists believe society is socially constructed though gender hierarchies which allow males to dominate society through their control over the language and subsequently reality as a whole (Tickner, 2004): as a result of reality’s construction through language, there is no universal truth. Furthermore, post-structuralist feminists’ rejection of a fixed female identity. They believe the ‘female’ gender as a whole may be nothing more than a myth, one that is shaped by the cultural and social aspects of our society (citing that, for example, not all women are able to bear children, showing that even the biological differences are social constructs within themselves). Many people discuss, in support and against, these type aspects of modern feminism. However, today i wanted to show you the HOW of these aspects in order to understand them further.
