Long before CGI, the Kwakwaka’wakw people brought transformation to life. These wooden masks carved from red cedar, painted in bold traditional colours, rigged with hinges and cords open in dance to reveal hidden faces.
In potlatch ceremonies the masks shift from animal shapes into ancestors or human form.

In my opinion, the best dancing is always at the potlatch. Being who we are and doing what we do, for our people. I had so much fun serving the ravens, and spending time with family. 🫶🏽 Culture is self care. Also cutest baby award goes to @fvrjohnson 🥰

INDIGENOUS POTLATCH SERIES
Spirit Energy
If soap grew wild on Haida Gwaii this is what it would look like. Traditionally the Potlatch is “the giving away of property and/or gift giving”. The bright energizing scent of this Potlatch Bar makes it great for gift giving or for treating yourself.
White Raven
White Raven is a mythological being of Haida legends with pure white feathers. She managed to trick the greedy Chief who held the moon captive for his own enjoyment. She released the moon back into the sky so the world could enjoy the light, ending the long black nights. As she flew through the smoke-hole of longhouse to release the moon into the night sky, the soot stained her beautiful white feathers and the transformation began.
Salish Sea Thunderbird
Thunderbird is a legendary creature of the We Wai Kai People living on the shores of the Salish Sea on Vancouver Island. It is a symbol of power and strength and is depicted in their art, songs and oral history. This luxury bar is scented with sacred Cedarwood to help soothe the body and spirit while our triple milk blend moisturizes and protects your skin.
Raven of Skedans
Within our Haida culture there are two main clans: Ravens and Eagles and are identified by their original village. My family is of the Raven Clan and descendants of the now deserted Village of Skedans – an Enesco heritage site located on Haida Gwaii. This is a nod to my heritage and all who came before me.
#Nuxalk we have always been here & we always will be. We never gave up our lands, identity or responsibility to future generations. We will work hard to protect our way of life, in the face of oppressive colonial systems built on land theft. #bellacoola #Acwsalcta #potlatch #governance #indigenous #love #water #land #humanrights

This clip from the Next Ancestors Podcast: Ep.02 with Chief Robert Joseph: he speaks about something we don’t talk about enough, the importance of maintaining relationships. The kind where you can sit together and speak openly about potlatch protocol, responsibility, and the work that still needs to be done.
Not social media statements, but actual relational accountability.
He reminds us that we come from a beautiful, powerful culture and that culture isn’t just history. It isn’t symbolic. It may very well be the remedy for many of the ailments for facing today disconnection fragmentation confusion about leadership and responsibility.
If we want stronger communities, it starts with stronger relationship, relationships, the kind, rooted and truth, humility, and protocol.

What a lovely surprise this visit from the Quinalt nation was! It turns out that like the Hawaiians, the Quinalt use voyaging canoes. My apologies for the music which is from the region, but not from the tribe. #indian #tribal #hawaiianislands #potlatch #quinalt #northwest #washingtoncoast #canoe #paddle #voyager
