On this 4th of July, I’m reminded of something simple but powerful: I am proud to be an American. I’ve had the honor of representing the United States in over 10 countries on 4 continents. And across every border, one thing has remained the same: people. Not politics. Not governments. People. Gracious, welcoming, curious people, each proud of their own country, culture, and way of life. And nearly every time, they ask the same questions: “What do you think of our country?”
“Did you like it here?”
“Would you come back?” My answer is always yes. Yes, your culture is beautiful.
Yes, your hospitality is unforgettable.
Yes, your pride in your homeland is something I deeply respect. And yes—we have more in common than we think. People everywhere are doing what we’re doing: raising families, educating kids, trying to build a better life with whatever tools they have. From Tokyo to Tunisia to the streets of Paris and plazas of Peru, I’ve met people who want safety, opportunity, and a fair shot, just like we do. In all those travels, I’ve had exactly one negative interaction. One. That tells you everything you need to know. I don’t take it lightly that I get to wear the flag on my chest. I am one of many athletes who represent the United States abroad, and I consider that role one of the great honors of my life. To everyone who has welcomed me around the world—thank you.
 To the flag I carry and the country I represent, thank you. Happy Independence Day. 🇺🇸
