When I was a newly-commissioned lieutenant, I had a plan — I was weirdly unaware of the Combat Exclusion Policy at that time (which, at the time, screened women out of about half the available Engineer roles/units), but I did know women Engineers went to Sapper school. So I branched as an Army Engineer, assumed I’d spend a career jumping between combat engineer and construction engineer jobs (my degree was in civil engineering), earn my professional engineer license, and eventually (hopefully) land at West Point for a permanent professor role in the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering. Seven years in, I had earned my Sapper tab, Air Assault wings, and jumpmaster status, led a route clearance platoon in Afghanistan, and was completing company command in an Infantry brigade. A different department at West Point had offered me a 2.5-year teaching gig (largely considered a prereq to compete for a PhD slot down the road), and I had just been accepted to Harvard. I was doing #allthethings. But — it wasn’t working for us as a family. I loved...truly loved...the work I was doing, but we simply didn’t have the support we needed to both stay on our career trajectories. (The amount of support...both paid and unpaid...it takes to pull off a dual mil career is a whole different conversation). So I pivoted. I’m now in Functional Area 49: Operations Research / Systems Analysis (ORSA). I’m actually still working in a tactical level unit, I can still deploy, I still go to the field — but have a lot more predictability day-to-day than I had previously. Along the way, I’ve given up some of my original goals — I’ll likely never command a battalion, the PE is somewhat irrelevant, and I turned down an offer to get my PhD and go teach as a senior rotator at West Point last winter. The reality is that my husband and I are among the 5% of Army service members in a dual-military marriage. We’ve spent 10 years balancing our career goals/requirements with our partner’s similarly demanding requirements, covering each other’s deployments and major training events, while raising kids and still really liking each other. The five things I’d create first Prereq: I’d want to pull together 3–5 excellent examples of the kind of work I actually want more of. That’s the foundation. From there, here’s what I’m building next: 🔧 Capabilities Deck 📄 Proposal Template 📜 Contract 🖼️ Presentation Template 🌐 Website These five tools help me land projects, move faster, and present the studio like it’s already the real deal. Because it is. BONUS — Client Presentation Framework: • Agenda • Recap goals • Show the work (isolated) • Show the work in context • End with next steps I use this same format for every major client milestone. Btw: Inside Maker Division, we’ve built templates or walkthroughs for each one of these. #creativebusiness #studioowner #freelancerlife #makerdivision #graphicdesignerlife
