Because Jack Henry is preverbal. He hasn’t been formally diagnosed with autism - but one of the symptoms he has battled with the most is the inability to communicate.

What you see here is one of my effectual, fervent prayers - that one day soon, it will avail much and we will be able to have some form of dialogue, no matter how basic. A mutter. A word. A smile to the bits that land for her/resonates. Sentences. Full blown conversation.
No one tells you how hard it is to have 1 way conversation with your child. So much so that sometimes you slip into unintentional silence because of it.
But these days, and with my firm position on presuming competence, I speak to her so often, I pray for her, I encourage her, I affirm her because she cannot do it herself yet. I know it is landing, I trust it is registering, I feel it is resonating and shifting something within her and I believe one day, she will thank me for it.

Yes, Rui uses some Makaton in his day to day life but he is also very good at other non verbal communication such as tone of voice. I may not get everything he says first time round either, but here I can quickly tell Rui doesn’t actually mean hello because of his tone and use of speech sounds.
As a parent to a preverbal child, we don’t always know and it can be a game of elimination. We definitely have some better days at this but just to keep things real here, sometime we can still struggle to know what Rui means, but Rui has a total communication environment around him and more often that not, we get there in the end!

When a child can’t speak, and is either pre verbal or non verbal, it’s often hard to know what their preferences are.
Sometimes it’s easy to think they don’t have preferences, or that it’s impossible to find out, without trial and error. We often make assumptions and choices for them. I’ve been that Mum, I’ve made those assumptions.
Finding a method of communication, that is functional, is vital. For Manny that’s pecs, and because of pecs he can pick which ice cream he wants.
As his mum I know for sure which is his favourite ice cream, because even though Manny doesn’t speak and is pre verbal, he can communicate. That feeling, that being able to communicate with Manny, and him being able to express his presences and his wants and needs, that’s everything to me.
