One of my Hawaiian grails has finally been snagged 🙏🏼 The big man Tony Tam Sing with his namesake private press LP TONY from 1975. This is kind of what you expect with music of the time from the island with soft, sun washed vocals and gentle acoustic guitars. Definitely Hawaiian sensibility in the phrasing, but also a little bit of folk, soft rock and that quiet calm that is typical of island life. This era of Hawaiian private press is special because so much of it was community driven. Small runs and sold at local shops, churches, hand to hand, small shows. Definitely why copies like this are scarce as I don’t believe the intention was for them to really leave home. This is a track I like although the stand out on the LP might be “You and I”. In a club scene saturated with the Minneapolis sound, Lucky Rosenbloom found his own funky fusion through the Word of God. Using a mixture of Korg and Moog synths, Steinway Concert Piano and a Dr. Rhythm drum machine, Lucky’s analog gospel grooves electrified the dancefloors of the mid-80’s while leaving some room for Jesus. Recorded at Minneapolis’s Custom Record Studios, he cut 200 copies of this 45 of which only a few are known to remain. The record was promoted on his cable access TV show “Lucky Mania TV,” where he encouraged kids to say no to drugs and take their vitamins. VOLCANIC TONGUE - A TIME TRAVELLING EVANGELIST’S GUIDE TO 20th CENTURY UNDERGROUND MUSIC OUT NOW* The context and history here is dense and tangled so it’s understandable there’s some confusion, but just to be clear this compilation is a *tie-in* to the book of David Keenan’s collected music writing, linked by David and the VT name. but it isn’t a *soundtrack* to the book. This record is a celebration of Volcanic Tongue the shop, and in particular their supremely inspiring Sunday evening mailing list, which was my first interaction with David’s writing. The starting point for compiling it was trawling through the several hundred records that had originally been ‘tip of the tongue’, as these got a full paragraph of DK gospel prose. VT existed as a shop during a very specific era of the internet - just on the cusp of digital music consumption becoming, well, all-consuming. This was more a period of obsessive messageboard debates and esoteric blogspots with shonky virus-strafed mp3 download links. The point is that there was nowhere to hear a lot of the stuff that VT were proselytising about, it was all communicated via language. At the time I had very little spare cash to buy records, so actual purchases from the VT list were rare, but I would read a ‘tip of the tongue’ that said something like “consummate weirdo genre demolition with a liberated approach to form that explodes extended rock moves with jagged tape edits, eerie little girl vocals over distant urban sound environments, epic free jazz outings and that classic what-the-fuck Futura edge” and spend the rest of the week walking around daydreaming what a record described like that would sound like. Occasionally I would hear one of the records years later and they didn’t quite live up to the version I’d built in my head, but no matter, all the tracks included on this exceeded the limits of what I could possibly imagine. Go cop this from your fave contemporary supplier of underground sounds. Can I give a record that I put out a highest possible recommendation? Never sold on Discogs but I do see a copy up on eBay for around $1500 right now 😒 If anyone has more info about it definitely let us know! Over the course of 4 long tracks this album takes you on a journey that starts with a quiet-loud-quiet existential belter, goes into a (very) long-form blues rock JAM, into a relatively short (5:30) heartfelt Hard Rock banger, off into a Zappa-esque Jazz-Rock ripper, and is topped off with a 2-and-a-half-minute instrumental synth/sax comedown coda. The guitars are soaring, the drumming is frenetic and bombastic, and the singer could take any of his peers to the mat.
