I see this argument all over social media and among early childhood educators, and maybe you don’t have to choose process over product…it’s more about being intentional about the experiences we’re creating for kids. ❤️
Do you prefer process art, crafts, or a mix of both with your kids? I’d love to hear your take! 👇

Art isn’t “extra.” 🎨
When children create using their own ideas, they’re doing so much more than making something cute or filling a little free time.
They’re making connections. Solving problems. Imagining possibilities. Taking creative risks. Making decisions—and learning to trust their own ideas.
That’s some seriously important thinking. 💛
What’s the most imaginative idea you’ve heard from a child lately? Tell me in the comments—I’d love to hear it!

There’s something powerful about giving children access to real artist tools, and trusting them to explore what they can do 🫶

✨The goal isn’t always to create a beautiful finished product.
🖌️Sometimes it’s about creating an environment that makes kids want to experiment, combine, change, undo, and try again.
🎨So instead of setting out a craft, I set out possibilities.
🖼️Model Magic + beads + shells + pasta + cardboard + popsicle sticks… and let them take it from there.
💙Because when we stop planning the outcome, we get to see their ideas instead.
This idea was from @studiosprout. Thank you for the fun art project.

And it goes like this… at least once a day 😂
Right down to the feet painting, that’s her favorite part!
How we got here:
✨ washable paint only
✨ a dedicated space to contain the process
✨ an art smock you EXPECT to get destroyed
✨ freedom to choose colors + tools
(she’s currently obsessed with spray bottles = fine motor skills bonus 🙌)
✨ yes to painting her feet (art)
✨ no to painting her eyeballs (chaos, we still need some rules 😅)
Toddlers don’t learn to love art from perfect setups. They learn because someone let them explore without panicking over the mess.
So go ahead, lay down a canvas, bring out the paper and paint, maybe sing a little song, watch the magic happen and wait until they start bringing the materials to you!

Kicking off the fall semester with Architecture Week! ✍️📐 All week, our after-school artists will be blue-printing and building their own custom dream houses. Next week, we transition to interior design and they’ll outfit their houses! Can’t wait to see how the artists’ visions come to life — stay tuned!
Waves of Wonder: An Ocean-Inspired Process Art Invitation// Before beginning our ocean-inspired artwork, we shared the beautiful wordless picture book Wave by @suzyleebooks . Through stunning illustrations, the story captures a young child’s playful interaction with the ocean & served as the perfect inspiration for extending our learning through art. Wordless books encourage children to become storytellers, strengthening comprehension, sequencing, vocabulary, & critical thinking as they use the illustrations to create their own narratives.
Inspired by @teaching2and3yearolds & our continued exploration of all things ocean, we invited children to create shimmering mixed-media seascapes filled with color, texture, & creativity.
To create our canvas, we connected two large poster boards & attached strips of construction paper from @discountschoolsupply to form 3-dimensional waves. Children then painted the waves using a mixture of glue & @colorationsart Metallic, Fluorescent, & Tempera Paints in shades of blue and white, creating glossy ocean scenes full of movement & depth.
To enhance the experience, we provided a Tinker Tray filled with sand, aluminum foil, shiny paper, tissue paper, & iridescent cellophane. Children selected materials to add texture & sparkle to their artwork, mimicking how sunlight reflects on the water & waves wash onto the shore.
As children painted, layered, & designed, they explored color mixing, texture, composition, & creative expression. Working on a large-scale, mixed-media project strengthened fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, sensory exploration, problem-solving, & spatial awareness while encouraging children to bring their own ideas to life.
The finished pieces beautifully captured the movement, texture, & wonder of the ocean, but the true magic was found in the creativity, exploration, & discovery that took place throughout the process. #tinkerwonderplay #processart #processartforkids #invitationtocreate #arteducationmatters
We LOVE this project at the studio! Fasteners are one of the most underrated studio materials in our opinion. They’re PERFECT for creating kinetic projects with joints and hinges. Turn simple paper into snakes, puppets, animals, pinwheels, robots, or anything that moves!
